Lady GaGa on SNL

Was anybody else impressed by Lady GaGa’s performance on SNL? I thought it was really good and well performed.

Yep. I hadn’t thought much of her one way or the other before that, but I thought she showed a lot of talent.

Yeah, that’s my view exactly. I think I might even like going to one of her concerts, even though that’s not really my type of music. She must put on quite a show!

I have to admit that “Paparazzi” song is kind of an earworm. Very Madonna-esque.

What the fuck was she wearing?

Saturn

Her version of Paparazzi at the VMAs was a complete theatrical show. This was barely more than a song. Not even in contention.

And since the song came after she was in a skit as herself opposite “Madonna” I had to think that Madonna was a better songwriter, singer, and performer than Lady Gaga at least at this point in her career. Heck of a sense of costuming, though, and a great nose job.

Not being familiar with Lady Gaga, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

I thought the first number was simply a forgettable techno-pop ditty, not awful, not great. I basically have zero recollection of it at this point.

For her second performance, I actually thought the costume was kind of cool. Started out as more techno-pop, though catchier than the first song. When she moved over to the piano, I was quite impressed with both her playing and her singing voice. But the performance as a whole, of what was either a single but very disjointed song or a series of unrelated short ones, kind of left me scratching my head.

She’s obviously very talented, but I didn’t quite get on board with her whole performance art thing.

Studies (entirely in-house, don’t ask for the numbers) have shown that this question is a Lady Gaga universal. No matter where she’s performing or what she’s singing, I always find myself asking “What the FUCK is she wearing?!”

I was impressed that she was able to rather quickly sit down at a piano and play while wearing Saturn.

I did not see the second song but I was very unimpressed with the first.

I do find the part where she sings the words Paparazzi rather catchy, but I thought her performance was bland. The dancing with the waving arms not quite in sync with the backup dancers and the stopping to strap on a synthesizer coupled with the just kind of singing and adding the fact that she was pretty lame in the skit earlier left me wondering how she got famous. Must be the outfits,

Is she able to remain upright without the gyroscope?

I’ll admit, there was something impressive, seeing what could be a throwaway pop tart sit down down at a piano and put her posh upbringing to good use. Britney never did that. But however talented she may be, and however entertaining she must have been back in her cabaret days, I actively dislike every one of her songs.

ETA Am I the only one who couldn’t figure out if Lady GaGa and Madonna were being played by the new cast members or not in that skit?

I’ve seen her name tossed around for a while, but SNL was the first time I’ve ever seen or heard this gal. She good-looking, and theatrical, but the music is just not my cup o’ tea.

Nope, me too

It looks like she was distracted by her costume for most of the performance. You can see her constantly reaching up to push the rings away from her face and readjusting them into place.

Or maybe I was just projecting… I spent the whole time holding my breath and waiting for a ring to smack her right in the forehead mid-performance (which might have been an improvement, come to think of it)

Epic costume fail… a good costume/prop should enhance the performance, not distract from it (or prevent the performer from sitting comfortably at the piano).

Which is too bad, because I normally think Gaga’s costumes are the best part of her performances (I think this one is genius)

You laugh, but she’ll be the last one standing when the earthquake hits!

(I laugh too. Good one Biffy.)

I thought her first number was totally forgettable. Her second number was quite interesting.

But lets face it, anytime a bunch of people are talking about a singer’s performance, and the topic of conversation centers around her costume, it doesn’t say much for her voice.

And yeah, it took me a long time to figure out that it actually was Madonna and Lady GaGa in the sketch.

I can’t decide how I feel about her. She’s fascinating yet loathesome to me. I do think she puts on a great show and I like everything of hers I’ve heard so far (admittedly that would only be four songs). But, there’s something about her face that makes me want to punch the crap out of her. She’s got a great body but that mug of hers. . . argh!Something about her fat face and big nose. . . I don’t normally judge a musical artist on their looks but she just brings out an irrational distaste in me. Yet, I can’t look away. The boyfriend said just the other morning “for someone who can’t stand her you sure are glued to the tv” (VH1 was on). I think she’s an attention whore of the highest order yet she’s obviously doing it right cause she has my attention. I also thougt the skit with Madonna and her was a great idea that was executed poorly.

Apologies for telling you way more than you ever wanted to know about my feelings on Lady GaGa.

The first number was crummy, and like so many pop artists these days, she was off-key in her singing. However, I thought her second number, specifically the piano ballad part, was surprisingly good and very listenable. And her intonation problems cleared up, too. For me it was almost like watching two different performers, between the first and second numbers.

Very distracting costume, though. I too was waiting for one of those rings to smack her right between the eyes.
