Does anyone know what language this is in, and more specifically, what the word renvaren means?

I’m pretty certain the language is Danish, although I don’t have my Danish-English dictionary handy, so I can’t tell you what that word means.

I looked up “tilletia tritici”, which appears in the first sentence, and it turns out to be a wheat smut.

In the 18th century half of the wheat harvest was lost by Ustilago tritici and Tilletia tritici.

There are a number of similar pages, but nothing that looks like an exact translation.

I’ve looked in a number of Danish-English dictionaries, and “renvaren” isn’t in there. So either it’s a verb form, a past participle or something, or else it’s a farming technical term.

Does any of this help? It’s definitely Danish.

My Danish colleague says it’s an uncommon compound word meaning something like “cleaned product”

Here’s my Danish friend’s response:

The obligatory drawing of test samples of seed corn (seed grain?), which are taken to measure

spireevne, sortsrenhed m.v. (Plantedirektoratet 1990) tages af renvaren

sprouting ability, the purity of the species of grain and more (Plantedirektoratet 1990: A danish national institution that deals with matters to do with plants) are taken from the cleaned grain

efter oprensning hos såsædsfirmaet.

So this means also that the word “renvaren” means the grain that has been rinsed, cleaned, purified. “ren” means “clean”; “varen” means “the article” or “commodity”.
