Laptop GPS

I have a new laptop (employer provided - Dell Precision M6400). It’s pretty well decked out including a wireless card for AT&T that I haven’t yet activated. It apparently has some kind of GPS built in to the wireless card and lets me know on bootup that the GPS module is active. Is there any way to access this GPS data (apply it to Google maps or something)? What is the main purpose of having it there? My employer said it provides some theft protection, but I don’t know how that works either.

According to the Dell website, the card “Allows you to retrieve location data from GPS satellites, utilize GPS navigation and location-based applications.” Customer reviews indicate that there is no GPS software on the computer, so you would need to buy that.

Google Earth Plus, a subscription service, can work with Garmin and Magellan; I don’t know if your card will work. Similarly, there is Lojack service for laptops, but I don’t know if your card will work.

Thanks. Any suggestions on how to find out what software might work? I’ve tried searching in various ways, but nothing useful comes up.

OK, this guy has instructions on editing the registry and getting the driver installed…

And another guy I found mentioned that it works with Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009. Once you get that first step done, you may find that it works with other software not mentioned.
