Laputa - Castle in the Sky - good as I remember?

Year and YEARS ago I watched this anime on the telly - it was great! Unfortunately, I can remember nothing mre about it than that.

I have had a look around for it on DVD - as a non-japense speaking guy, I would prefer a decent dub or subtitles, but all I can find is the japanese DVDs, or a Disney dub, which is, by all accounts, one of the dodgiest dubs mankind has ever produced.

ANyone got any info about this? Is it as good as I remember, and if it is, where can a UK monoglot get a decent DVD version?

I think it’s very good, but it shows its age in comparison to more recent Ghibli releases.

The old dub is a bit over the top at times, but I have heard that the Disney dub is pretty good. As far as I can tell, the Disney dub hasn’t been released in Region 2 UK yet. Even the Japanese disc has the old Tokuma dub. Both the Japanese and American releases have English subtitles.

Here is a list of the home video releases to date.

I’ve only seen the Disney dub, but found it to be fine–in particular, I was surprised at how many “name” actors were involved, since I didn’t recognize them while watching the film (which can be distracting). Living in the US, I’m afraid I can’t help those across the pond, but I found it quite good (though not as good as, say, Spirited Away, IMHO).

I saw this film on TV years ago as well, I think I was about 10 at the time, and I recently got hold of the Japanese DVD (thankfully it has both English audio and subtitles). I was worried that it wouldn’t be as good as I remebered, but I really enjoyed it and I wasn’t dissapointed. I don’t really know much about anime, but this probably my favourite film of that genre. I’d definately reccomend tracking down a copy.

Why not just read Gulliver’s Travels instead?
