After a couple of days of frustrating searches for a watch with a large date display, I turn to you folks. Most easy-read watches (for people who need reading glasses) have large time numbers, but tiny date displays. None of the ones I saw with large date displays had a backlight feature. I prefer an analog watch, but I guess I can switch to a digital, if that’s all that’s out there. Anybody have one to recommend in the under $100 range?
There are two options that I can think of for an analog watch to have a bigger date display.
One is using dual disks such as this:
The other is using the mini magnifying glass (cyclops) like rolex does:
Are either of these methods acceptable?
I realize the first one is out of your price range, but if I know it is acceptable - I can see if I can find a brand/model that uses it in your price range.
ETA: Oh and is the backlight a REQUIREMENT?
The double dial is fine. I’ve seen others like that. The magnifier is also fine. I’d prefer a backlight, as I wake up much earlier than my spouse. I don’t want to get up at 4 a.m. however. It’s not a deal killer, as I can use my old watch as a work around. That Citizen is a nice piece, but at this point in my life, it’s just a waste of money. I’ve been wearing this same Timex for the last 15 years, and it still runs fine, but I can’t see the damn date window.
I have had a Timex Expedition digital watch for 5 years. Has a backlight, large time and date display. I believe it cost $30.00. Still has the same watchband. On the third set of batteries. Cheap entertainment.
Chefguy,
There are several options for analog watches that include a digital element. If you do an image search on “analog digital watch” you’ll see what I mean.
Will this fit your needs?
This is my personal preference – a clean, easy-to-read analog display with some digital functions such as day/date, stopwatch, timer and alarm.

I am deeply disappointed that this was not about trying to plan a massive simul-date for 50 speed-dating couples.
It will probably end up being what I buy. It’s curious to me that some of them have the time displayed in both modes; not sure why a person would want that feature. I’m assuming that you have a choice as to what is displayed in the digital window, though. Now to find one that also has a large, easy to read face.
You do. Mine allows for two different digital times, and one is always synced with the analog time. The other one I always have set to UTC. The usual display I have shows day & date. That’s my standard setting.
