Larry Wilmore tabbed as Colbert replacement

Couldn’t be happier. He was under used, and his segments always deliver weapon’s grade snark. I’m looking forward to seeing him stretch his talent.

I do too but only so she can stop all the loudness and eyerolling on TDS.

ETA: I like Samantha Bee. And polite laughter is what she’s going for.

He has never been a Correspondent though, just one of the excellent Contributors The Daily Show accumulated over the years. So I am not sure if “under used” is the right phrase unless you just mean you wished he was on more often?

Yay!

The title: The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore. Umm, aren’t they going to get hassled by someone? Philip K. Dick’s estate? Fox (if they bought all the rights for the movie)? Technically titles and common phrases aren’t copyrightable, but that doesn’t stop lawyers from making themselves nuisances. Sheesh, Spike Lee sued to stop the rename of TNN to Spike TV.

Her appearances on Girls were dialed way back, so she’s capable of playing it smaller. I’m assuming the brashness is exactly what TDS is asking of her.

Comedy Central is owned by Viacom. Anybody who tries to pick Viacom’s pocket pulls back a bloody stump.

Word.

All the articles are saying that he will drop the show - and he was show-runner, not just a writer - as soon as a transition can be arranged.

Show-runners work 90-hour weeks. You can’t have a second job.

People really like Jessica Williams a lot? I kind of had her as just an “OK” correspondent, though I bet she is a very good actress.

She’s pretty big with the younger demo. And I like her. The only reason I don’t like her *a lot *is because I find her insufficiently news-y. Though she’s improving on that too. I try to keep in mind that she started on the show super young. Like 22 or something. She’s only around 23 - 24 now.

I like Jessica Williams a lot, and I love Samantha Bee (perhaps my all time favorite correspondent other than Colbert). Larry will be great as a host on his own show, I have no doubts.

I even had a dream I watched an episode of it last night, and I remember thinking “wow it didn’t take them very long to get the new guy going on his show!”

FWIW, Samantha Bee is married to Jason Jones.

I like her as a correspondent, but I can see how others might not. I think she goes more a slightly more “subtle uncomfort” that the real “gotcha” moments that John Oliver did (his piece on gun control in Australia was a thing of beauty*

*Three part series

I think that’s a fair criticism. My favorite correspondents have been the ones who seem the most like regular reporters. But there are plenty of correspondents on news shows who don’t do hard news as such, and I like her a lot. TDS hadn’t had a performer like her before, and not just because she’s black.

The goal of these lawsuits isn’t to win the lawsuit, it’s to be paid to go away. Even Viacom has to pay their lawyers a lot of money if it goes thru a full trial. If it’s cheaper to pay off the suers than your lawyers, then these lawsuits happen.

With the exception of Jason Jones, I like the current cast. New guy whose name I don’t know yet seems to be starting out strong.

I actually wished they used the correspondents more often, as Stewart gets kind of ranty and repetitive when he has to carry most of a weeks worth of episodes on his own.

I kind of wonder why the correspondents don’t get more bits. I’d imagine they’d want the exposure, and Stewart doesn’t seem to mind sharing the spotlight.

So maybe they will grab Jessica Williams - from a NYTimes article on it:

I can’t wait!

My wife and I are pretty excited to see Larry Wilmore take over the post-Daily Show timeslot. And as a bonus for me, I won’t have have to adjust my DVR since I don’t take Colbert separately but just extend my TDS recording by half an hour.

For the Daily Show correspondents, I like them all except New Guy Whose Name I Don’t Know who has yet to impress me. I’m not a huge fan of Jason Jones and Samantha Bee (my wife loves her) but I think they are capable separately and together they are better than the sum of their parts. For the rest I think Jessica Williams is a cut above Al Madrigal and Aasif Mandvi. Of the “contributers” Wilmore is the best followed by Kristen Schaal, Lewis Black, and John Hodgman. All of those are pretty funny but Black used to make me laugh more and Hodgman’s evil aristocrat character is comfortably funny but doesn’t leave me wanting to see him more often unlike the others.

I’m wondering how he’s going to be a biased news reader/commentator without a foil, or without being a foil. If that’s what he’s going to do.

Part of what made his segments funny was trapping Stewart into “four hundred years of white guilt” quagmires. If he stays with this kind of persona, it makes the mostly-white audience his foil instead, and they can only laugh at themselves for so long. There was another show on CC with that kind of format recently (I can’t remember the name) and it didn’t last too long.

He’s not.
