Larson comic - what's the funny

More than just hot dogs. FUD is a Mexican company that supplies grocery stores. They produce just about everything edible.

“FUD” is just the English word “food”, but spelled according to Spanish rules of phonetics. A bilingual pun.

So the “greater fool” principle does have an upper bound!

Well, it did that day.

Huh, I just thought the cat was looking for his Uncle Fud.

I’m one of many whose cat food container is labeled “Cat Fud”.

Is it also labeled “Samsung” (or “Kenmore,” or “Amana,” or “Maytag”)?

I guess it depends on your definition of “too far”. One that came pretty close was the “Jesus rises from the grave” cartoon that was never officially published but was included in the “Pre-History of the Far Side” book.

You’re just going to mention this without a link? That’s okay; it wasn’t hard to find with a google search. In fact, the first hit I found gave the cartoon in the context of an appreciative Christian blog post.

There was also the time he drew Mohammed:

Why do you feel this went too far?

I’m guessing some people take sacrilege more seriously than others? Not necessarily that @Shoeless is one, but he at least acknowledges that fact.

I’m not being intentionally dense or insensitive just looking for understanding, is mentioning Jesus in any sense in a cartoon sacrilegious?

I just figured there would be some people who were offended at his poking fun at the resurrection or yeah, might see it as sacrilege.

Personally, I thought it was hilarious.

That one has been on the wall of my classroom since it was published. Nobody gets it.

Well, I think I’ve seen them all, including the prehistory, and strips never submitted for publication, and I stand by my statement. The snake in the playpen doesn’t go too far for me.

Lol!
We need cat fud containers that look like miniature clothes dryers that say “cat fud” on the door!

This is quite silly. “fud” is how dogs write “food”. I’d be surprised if cats could understand that at all.

Hah! Shows what you know.

Thanks for that! I’ve re-pinned it. And, BTW, I thought that Jesus one was hilarious. Almost makes him likeable.

I think one reason I loved The Onion so much back in the day is that much of its humor was similar to The Far Side, as in going so cruel it becomes absurd and goes past being offensive.

For example:

(That blog notes that The Onion removed it from its archives, I still find it funny.)

This one is still on their site though:

The sentiments in both are cruel and evil but so exaggerated that it enters into surrealism.
