Las Pulgas Road, and other bizarre street names

So I was riding my Las Pulgas Road yesterday. Who the hell names a road ‘The Fleas’?

It’s your road, rename it!

By, dammit! BY! :smack:

FreakStreets.com might come in handy here.

New York City has Tiemann Place (time’n place?) in Harlem. Waverly Place in the Village intersects with…itself. Then there’s this corner in Brooklyn, which probably should be in the Village.

Two of the more desirable areas in Haines, Alaska are named Mosquito Lake and Mud Bay. Poetic, ain’t it?

“Beaver Ruin Road” in Norcross. Ga. If a street name EVER needed a explanation, this is it.
“Red Rover Mine Road” off of the 10 towards Vegas. I don’t know why, but I love that name.

Peace - DESK

One of my favorites is “Thing Valley Road”, found in the Laguna Mountains east of San Diego. I don’t think it would be wise to turn down it on a dark and stormy night…

Philly has Street Road, which I’ve always been very fond of.

Ha Ha Road, in Woolwich, southeast London.

And Columbus, Ohio has Lane Avenue.

Santa Barbara has, all in the same neighborhood, Quarantinas (Quarantines, of course), Los Indios Muertos (Dead Indians), and Salsipuedes (I think something like ‘leave if you can’).

Jump Off Joe Road in Valley, Washington, which takes you, not surprisingly, to the oddly named Jumpoff Joe Lake.

There’s a Beaver Ruin Creek nearby. Might be a corruption of Beaver Run (run means creek in some places), or maybe there were ruins of a beaver dam there once.

Dead Cat Alley

Woodland, California

Then there’s Backlick Road in Virginia. I don’t want to know. . .

Northern VA has Gallows Road.

Montgomery County, MD has Lost Knife Road.

Avenue Road in Toronto.

Also, Old Cummer Avenue. :: shudder ::

A search on streetmap.co.uk turns up a couple of hundred of these in Britain.
Spanker Lane in Derbyshire is one that amuses me.

In the Kitchener-Waterloo area we have

Tulane Street. Yeah… It’s got two lanes.

And out in the country, there’s Country Lane. It’s a country lane, basically just going to a couple farms (no exit).

Down in Brandywine is Short Cut Road.
