Las Pulgas Road, and other bizarre street names

Also, let’s not forget Butthole Lane , in Shepshed, UK.

In Newnan, GA, there was an Upper Pig Pen Road.

In the Detroit area, one of the major roads for the northern suburbs is Big Beaver Road. If you want to get there, just take I-75 and get off at exit 69

I’d like my address to be on Labor In Vain Road in Ipswich, Massachusetts.

There used to be an Anthrax Street in Fayetteville.

Johnny L.A.: I used to commute to San Diego from Los Angeles to teach at UCSD, so I know Las Pulgas Road well. And since I drive I-5 up to Washington twice a year, I’m also familiar with Los Banos and Jumpoff Joe Creek. These are all good places to stop and take a leak.

Brownie points if you can pronounce the name of my hometown correctly: Puyallup.

My personal favorite: Shades Of Death Road. I would so love to live at 1313 Shades of Death Road.

Hardscrabble Road, along I-684 in New York State, has always cracked me up. In the privacy of my own mind, I call it “Quixotic on a Triple Word Score Lane.”

Off the Saw Mill River Parkway, also in New York State, is Reader’s Digest Road. I’m sure it has something to do with the magazine and there is a legitimate reason it’s named that. But I always think “I bet that road used to be longer,” when I pass it.

And, of course, I can’t forget that somebody I used to know lived on Cock Street. That never stopped being funny. I’d clamor to be the one to give directions.

In Milwaukee there’s a Falling Heath Road. Which in and of itself could be considered odd. But from a distance I always read it was “Failing Health” and wonder why they would name a street that.

In central California I remember a road called “Brown Material Road”, and the proof of my memory is here. When I Googled up this street sign, I read that the road was originally called “Shit Road”, but the county got all PC and changed it.

Another No Name Road in Healdsburg CA - where you can find the No Name Resort

That’s actually not between Bakersfield and Fresno, it’s still in Bakersfield. Our main post office is on 7th Standard Road. Anywho, if I remember correctly, the naming of that road goes back to WW2 and it was named by the military. There’s no accounting for military naming.

My favorite roads are also along the 5, somewhere past Peasoup Andersons (I think): Big Panoche Road and Little Panoche Road .

This of course causes my friends and I to have discussions like this:
“So, um, Ryan, do you want to go down on Big Panoche or Little Panoche?”
“You know, Angel, there are pros and cons to both.”
“Continue.”
“Well, I mean, Big Panoche has been had much more down it, ya know? Like, there’s more to do and see.”
“Right, but honestly, do you really want to go down Panoche that has had that many people in it?”
“Well, that was my next point. Little Panoche has less to do and see, but there’s always that nice, comfy, close feeling that Little Panoche gives ya. It feels good, lemme tell ya.”

Shades of Death Road

Needle Rush Lane outside Wilmington, NC

Woodrow St intersects Wilson St in Wilson NC

Chicken Drive was built in a small subdivison next to a fried chicken/barbecue restaurant also in Wilson, NC. A second street, Barbecue Road, was to intersect it but Hurricane Floyd flooded it (8 feet deep).

Tobacco Road, also in Wilson, NC. (Sign was stolen often- so was Hooker Road, in back of the UNC By the Sea in Wilmington, NC).

I’ve heard of Disk Drive and Lois Lane but don’t know locales.

Well, dis Las Pulgas all ya want, but one of the big boulevards in LA, “La Cienega”, means “The Swamp.”

My grandparents lived near Cottonwood, AZ on “Owl Slick Road.”

Pyoo-al-up.

Wanna try me on Sequim?

Wait. That last sounded dirty. I meant pronunciation.

Not according to Google Maps.

Sequim is a lot easier than Pyscht. I’ve lived in Washington nearly all my life and I’m still not quite sure how to say Pyscht.

Anyone know about Talking Rock Road in Fairfax, VA? I used to have a friend who lived on it. I’ve always wanted to know what the story is behind the name but my friend had no idea what it might be.

How do you get “Pyoo-all-up” out of Puyallup"? Did the U and Y get reversed somewhere?
