I’m reposting this to get the finals thread started.
Favorites
Adam Hunter - Reminds me of Christopher Titus.
Marcus - An imressionist and comedian all in one.
Iliza Shlesinger - Maybe not the funniest woman, but the funniest one to make the finals. [male chauvenist pig] Looks great in a tshirt [/mcp]
Sean Cullen - Great stage presence. I get the feeling that he’s been using his A- material and holding back for the finals. May be the dark horse.
Also rans
Jeff Dye - Jokes are a bit stale and no real flow to his sets
Paul Foote - Best when he goes on a rant, but can that work all the time?
Louis Ramey - Ditto Jeff Dye with no flow to his sets. Really disappointed that he violated Cad’s Law thus I have to assume he is short on material
Jim Tavare - Does he have a routine without the cello? Too many one liners which would be great if Henny Youngman were voting.
Oh God please go away
Papa CJ - So wrong in so many ways.
God’s Pottery - They’re not really comedians are they? Maybe if they stopped singing all the time and did a bit in character it would be better. “Jesus loves you but not sexually . . . well maybe. Is your name Mary? Are you a virgin?” How in the world will they do improv or heckling?
Ron G - Plain damn not funny (ooooo - oooooo - AAAHHHH - oooo - ooooooo!)
Esther Ku - She is the token young woman who’s kinda funny but needs a lot more experience like Amy Schumer was last year. Scary thing was that Amy made it all the way to 4th.
Can we post spoilers for the show in here? I’m going to box them in case you’re on the left coast or something. Maybe we can go to unboxed after today?
I’m glad Iliza won the final face off. She was clearly the funniest of the three, and the two most annoying acts, God’s Pottery and Esther Ku, are now gone. Yay! I agreed with Iliza that it was dumb for Ku to choose to go against her. It was clearly out of spite (though Iliza came off as a back-stabby braggart). There’s no way the producers would off the only two women in the competition this early in the game; also, Iliza is just a lot funnier. Esther should have gone against Ron G and Papa CJ. She might have beaten those two
I didn’t think Jim Tavare was the funniest in the smack down (though he wasn’t bad), and the voting on that was wonky. God’s Pottery was not funny at ALL, but they came in second. Still like my favorites, Marcus, Sean Cullen, and Louis Ramey. I like Iliza’s act more now, having seen her A game. Paul Foot is growing on me.
Because the West Coast show just wrapped up, I’ll make this unboxed.
I think God’s Pottery won the first round simply because their jokes pissed of Ron G so much, look at his expression during the round. They won the second round with the ‘Old Testament’ bag and Adam wrapped up their victory with the tired ‘Hack Street Boys’ joke.
I think it was a mistake to go after Ku this round. She is the sort of person you can beat head-to-head, but this week two people go home - so you could still beat her and come in second and still go home. Knowing everyone was going after Esther, I would have picked Ron G or Papa CJ. I could beat them if need be but chances are that they won’t gat the most votes so I am not at risk.
I’m really enjoying this season. Haven’t seen the latest ep yet, but the whole season has had me laughing and that’s REALLY good for my blood pressure.
Based on last ep, I like Marcus.
They’re being kinda politically correct in passing Papa CJ & some of the other foreigners through I think, but they see & hear things we don’t.
I was hoping Esther Ku and God’s Pottery would end up in the head to head, but I didn’t expect them to drag one of my favorites along with them. Fortunately the audiences make better judges than the pros, and she’s still in it.
I wasn’t super impressed with God’s Pottery in the audition process and was stunned when they made it to the Finals…
But I thought they were pretty funny in this episode- I caught myself laughing at them in the Smack-Off Challenge… and was glad they finally brought out a new song. That said- there was no way they were ever going to win, and I’m glad Iliza won the challenge in the end.
(Although- I think she came off a little too self involved when Esther picked her for the battle.)
I think you guys underestimate Jim Tavare- as he doesn’t have a whacky personality- but he seems to be pretty witty and I think he could do pretty well on the challenges. (Sidenote- I saw him on an episode of Wings years and years ago… I was surprised to see him turn up here.)
You are crazy. Amy Schumer was one of the best I have seen on the show. I was shocked she did not win. Gerry Dee could be funny at times but was not funnier than her. Reep I think should have come in 2nd as I thought he had good stuff and was kinda versitile. Lavelle was very funny the first time I saw him, but then he told the same jokes…every…single…week…of…the…show. If he told a joke that wasn’t about being fat or black I missed it. But Amy rocked. Her jokes were awesome and she completely owned the Speed Joking when all the others fell flat on their face. Different strokes I guess.
I’m rooting for Jim Tavare. I don’t think he’ll win in the end, but I’d like to see him do well. I just really like the “guy in a tux playing a bass” thing. Strikes me as old-fashioned. I WAS suprised to see him win the immunity though. One thing to note about who won the rounds and who didn’t was that Jamie Kennedy said a few of the comics used old material in the Yo Mama round. It appears as if the judges rewarded originality rather than delivery of previously used material.
As for Esther Ku, I’m kinda sad she’s gone. She wasn’t funny, but I saw potential in her for driving the other comedians up the wall with her laugh and lack of talent. She picked Iliza because Iliza lied to her about not picking her. Iliza seemed not able to recognize that.
I’m glad God’s Pottery is gone. They didn’t have one joke in that face off with Esther and Iliza. My sister had an interesting theory. She thinks the whole Jesus act may not be such a huge act. While they are certainly exaggerating the whole thing, one would expect a parody of super religious guys to eventually hint at not being entirely pure, or to make sly fun of religion in general. These guys didn’t do that. They were ALWAYS nice.
I think Louis Ramey will win, ultimately, though I shall be rooting for Jim Tavare.
Is there any info out there on who they really are? They have a website but it stays in character the whole time, no mention of real names or real agendas. Adam Hunter did say that he was facing off with their characters, not them, so they must have turned off the schtick and dropped the personae when the camera was off. I wonder if they’re actors or what. Part of me thinks they’re a couple. I can’t find anything about them, though.
My pick is Sean Cullen, but since my favorite never, ever wins on reality shows, I’m sure he won’t get it. My favorite last season was Doug Benson, if that tells you anything about my tastes.
is he the guy with the weird eyebrows? One of the male contestants has highly trimmed eyebrows. It’s disconcerting. It’s the guy who does the Christopher Walken impersonation.
I think you mean Marcus (link to his Myspace page)-- he does the impressions. Sean Cullen is a husky guy with a stentorian voice. He sang that song about porn in the semi-finals.
Doug Benson from last season had those Cat in the Hat eyes that were too close together. He always skirted the line of too raunchy and got bleeped a couple of times. He was a little too edgy for the show, more’s the pity considering the blandness of the final 5.
Sean Cullen is my favorite. God’s Pottery I thought sucked at first, I don’t think their songs are that great, but they really started to grow on me. “Your mom is so great she was elected mayor of Awesomeville!” (Lame reply by Ron G), “… By a landslide!”
Ron G is not funny at all. Marcus is really funny, but it bothers me that his entire persona seems like an impression of Dave Attell.
I just got around to watching this on TiVo today. I’m sad about Esther’s elimination (she was cute to look at, dammit) although it was expected because her jokes were way too “I’m Korean” centered. Glad God’s Pottery are gone, while they’re great characters for a sketch show, I don’t want to see them doing stand-up.
I’m personally rooting for Louis Ramey, Jim Tavare, and Adam Hunter. I think they’re the best comedians and the best acts out of the group. I also like Jeff Dye but I’m afraid he’s not experienced enough to make it to the end. I’m pretty sure he’ll get picked for a head-to-head and lose before it gets to the America Votes portion.
Iliza certainly won my respect on this last show. I wasn’t crazy about her until she came out with her A game this week. Kudos to her.
I’m glad Ku and God’s Pottery are gone. Neither one of them were funny - we were completely dumbfounded when they got through and just sat there with our jaws on the ground wondering how that happened.
I also find Papa CJ unbelievably bad and am looking forward to his demise. Oh, and let’s add Paul Foote to that too. Oops, forgot Sean Cullen. yawn Hasn’t made me laugh yet.
My favorites are Iliza, Adam, Jeff, and Jim - not in any particular order. This should be an interesting season.
Don’t think this has aired over in Pacific land yet (or is in the middle of airing) so spoiler box ho!
Papa CJ annoyed the crap out of me tonight, with his “I think Iliza has used up her best material already.” What the hell, man, you used the SAME MATERIAL every time you were on stage! I’m SO glad he was eliminated, I was tired of that Kama Sutra joke already.
Wasn’t surprised to see Paul Foot leave as well. I really hope the other comedians stop putting Iliza down just because she hasn’t been in the business very long. She commanded 60%+ of the votes twice in a row so that has to count for something. I think she’s one of the better female comedians I’ve ever seen, much less just on Last Comic Standing.
Oh and here’s some non-spoiler stuff. I really hate comedians who have a fake voice/do the yelling thing when they’re acting. I’m looking at you Sean Cullen. And Marcus as well. The difference is, Marcus is somewhat funny when he’s doing his confessionals/acting normal. Sean Cullen hasn’t been funny yet. I hope he and Ron G are the next to go because while they may have more “experience” they just aren’t funny. The other 6 would make a good final 6 I think. Probably the best out of the final 12 chosen.
I think things went down as they should have. Jeff Dye did the best at the props, so deserved immunity. While I find Paul Foot funny, I don’t see him as doing well in the competition, and he didn’t seem to be enjoying the communal living. Papa CJ not only sucked, but was all condescending and a bit sexist towards Iliza, so I’m glad she kicked his ass.
I hope they don’t challenge Iliza again next week. I can see why someone would, thinking she can’t possibly have any more material left, but c’mon. Give it a rest. Challenge Ron G, who hasn’t had one funny moment yet, please!
I just got caught up, and agree with the outcome. Dye nailed the prop comedy competition. Wow, Carrot Top looks strange, but not in a funny way.
The next “comic” they need to eliminate is Bill Bellamy, the host. He is supposed to be funny, right? Has he ever said or done anything that was even mildly amusing?
Did they ever mention why Tavare was on crutches?
And yeah, Ron G should be the next person to put up or shut up.
