Does ‘carrot top’ wear a wig? Why was he wearing makeup?
Man, talk about getting it right. Four down, and they were the four worst. Now if wRong G and Cullen get shown the door this week, we’ll be fully in the funny.
I’m pretty sure that was just for a goof. They seem to have plenty of props like that lying around the house. He probably just decided “Oh, I think I’ll go out on crutches today”.
The hair is his own (or at least it was a couple of years ago – maybe he’s had to…errr…augment since then). The makeup is probably to distract you from all the plastic surgery.
I would have loved to see the what the Israeli Carrotop would have done on the Immunity Challenge. It seemed like Jeff Dye was the only one who made an effort to build anything. Just for that he was the right one to win.
Definately the right two left. Papa CJ and his hate should be deported and his visa permanently torn up. Paul Foot had a complete mental breakdown that was scary to watch (and not in a funny way).
Which reminds me. Wasn’t it Papa “Same Routine 3 Times in a Row” CJ that ridiculed Iliza for not having enough material?
Will they shy away from Iliza and her 60+% victory rating? I don’t think so. After her 2nd dominating victory, here was the conversation in the back room.
Marcus: 2 wins in a row. You need to give her credit.
Someone else: For what?
Marcus: Being funny
<silence>
And what is with the love for Ron G? My 9 year old if funnier than him and he seems like a real jerk to the housemates.
Buy:
Jeff Dye - Starting to come into his own. Let’s see what the confidence booster of last week will do for him.
Louis Ramey - Remember he started lower due to his Cad’s Law violation.
Sell:
Adam Hunter - Going downhill fast. Too angry and I don’t think it’s a goof.
Sean Cullen - Half of what he says is comedy gold. The other half is freakin’ bizarre.
Hold:
Marcus - Still the funniest all-around. Not to typecast him, but will he pull out some impressions this week?
Iliza Shlesinger - 2-0 in elimination. Case closed! [male chauvenist pig] Looks great in a wet tshirt [/mcp]
Goodbye:
Jim Tavare - He would be perfect in a sitcom as the neighbor who comes over and trades quips with the main character. He just isn’t the LCS.
Ron G. - If he stays this week, it will be proof that there is no all-loving merciful God.
He was my early favorite just because he’s cute, but it turns out he’s funny too, who knew? He’s got some amusing clips at youtube under the name jeffdye. At least check out the soup clip.
I’m really starting to like Iliza too. This past week she was an interesting combination of cocky and paranoid - with good reason on both accounts. If the other comics have a brain, they’ll leave her alone this week. Knocking out four people is an accomplishment, and they shouldn’t be eager to go after her knowing now that she can come up with a decent set with very little time. We’ll see.
My dream final throwdown three for this week’s match would be Jim Tavare, Adam Hunter, and wRon G. I harbor the most doubts about these guys at this point. I’d like to see their A game and see which of them deserves to stay and which has nothing more but just cute quips and running gags.
Bump for this week’s episode.
Did I miss something? Why was Marcus automatically in the finals?
He won immunity by doing his impressions for the Playmates. Who were wow, soooo annoying.
Thoughts on the performances? Iliiza and Louis Ramey were the funniest. I also somehow liked Ron G. Sean Cullen, who I usually like, was weird and the song just did not work. Jim Tavare was boring. Jeff Dye, Sound of Music and homeless humor, really? Adam Hunter, meh, hit or miss.
I must have missed that. Was tonight a 2 hour perfonance? If so, stupid NBC.COM listed it as starting at 8pm instead of 7 OR they run it in Arizona an hour early. Either way, their online episodes are 2 weeks behind.
So based soley on the elimination round . . .
Iliza (in) - Looks like she’s starting to run out of material. All of her routines are starting to meld into each other. Maybe the boys’ strategy of making her compete in back-to-back eliminations will work.
Louis (in) - Top comic tonight. It’s hard to do sex jokes without being vulgar but he pulled it off.
Ron (out) - Didn’t laugh once. That quivery voice of his is soooo much more annoying than Iliza’s girl voice.
Sean (in) - Was that song supposed to be funny? It wasn’t! He benefits from have at least two (probably three) comics less funnier than he is.
Jim (out) - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Jeff (in) - His routine probably would have been funnier if it didn’t look like it was inspired by Marcus’ “Willy Wonka” bit so much.
Adam (in) - Borderline funny but the angry stomping around bit has got to stop.
I think only 4 of the performers can be in, since there are five slots and Marcus has one of them. Based on their work tonight, I think Jim, Jeff, and Adam should be out, but based on overall body of work on the show, I’d substitute Jeff for Ron G.
Iliza for the win. That’s my prediction, but of course, I’m ALWAYS wrong about reality shows, so…
I must be in the minority because I found Jim and Jeff to be great, and Sean and Ron to be Og-awful.
I think Louis and Iliza are definitely in, Louis because he’s undeniably the best and funniest comedian of the bunch plus he had a good personality during the house portion, and Iliza because she’s funny and had the underdog edit for the show.
Ron G should be out, unless America is made up of Girls Next Door, but I doubt it. If he gets one of the top 5 spots I’ll…I…I don’t know what I’ll do. But it will be something drastic. I’ve discovered why I don’t like him and don’t think he’s a good comedian: he draws out his jokes way on stage. He might make a joke with a great punchline, but he then reinforces the same joke over and over again for like a minute. It doesn’t work and kills what would otherwise be an acceptably funny joke, especially in a short time slot like they have.
Sean Cullen I don’t think should make it either. The song was unfunny and not very entertaining. In fact, I think the audience only laughed because he made strange faces between each line he sung. He’s a great singer and he has a wonderful voice, but this isn’t a singing competition. He might have a chance to make it through since the show has heavily shown him through the editing.
I liked Jeff Dye, Jim Tavare, and Adam Hunter’s sets. Jeff’s was weaker than his semi-final performance but I still think it was good enough to boost him to the finals, especially with his personality and the edit on the show thus far. I think both Adam and Jim are going to falter because neither was really focused on the past three weeks: they got minimal air time compared to others. I think it’s a real toss-up as to who will make it through, but I’m going to give the edge to Adam simply because I think the people that watch the show will be more in line with Adam’s style of jokes than Jim.
So in conclusion:
My prediction on the final 5: Marcus, Louis, Iliza, Jeff, Adam
Eliminated this week: Sean, Ron, Jim
Final 5 elimination: Marcus
Final 4 elimination: Adam
Final 3 elimination: Jeff
Final 2 elimination: Iliza
Winner: Louis
Edited: Oh, and for the record I cast all my phone votes for Jeff and Jim, and my online votes were split between Jeff, Jim, and Louis.
Man, that Playboy Bunny bedtime story had to be the worst competition they could have come up with. Who the hell produces this show?
I don’t ever want to see Hefner. The man disgusts me.
Just saw the Playboy episode. Definitely the worst reality show challenge of recent memory.
My thoughts on the remaining contestants:
Favorites:
Iliza Schlessinger - She has great comedic timing and appears to me like a professional comedian. She has knocked out four contestants and can conjure up routines on the go.
Louis Ramey - Also has great timing and I like most of his material. His personality appeals a bit less to me now than in the beginning, but I still think he’d probably make a worthy winner.
Middle-ground:
Jeff Dye - Is sort of uneven but pretty funny on occasion. I think his charm plays to his advantage. At the very least he seems like a good guy.
Sean Cullen - Sean was simply hillarious during his audition. Intelligent, disturbing, funny. Probably one of the smartest people in the house, but since the audition he has only been… Singing? He needs to step up his game.
Jim Tavaré - I do like his old-school routine and his clever manners. It’s nice to see somebody be funny and smart without having to be hysterical or raunchy. However, I think he’s sometimes a bit disconnected from the LA audience.
Non-favorites:
Ron G. - Made a funny joke about LA and mexicans some weeks ago and has since been completely unfunny. Would not have lasted a challenge against Iliza.
Adam Hunter - Gives off a mean and nervous vibe as he stomps around impatiently on-stage. I like him better than Ron G., but I wouldn’t mind terribly if he didn’t make the cut.
Marcus - Would be middle-ground, but I don’t like his impressions. They are unoriginal (could all impressioninsts just *not *do Christopher Walken for ten years or so?) and I have spotted material that he has lifted from established comedians (Jeff Goldblum-routine from Frank Caliendo, movie trailer routine from Pablo Fransisco). Those things aside, he can be a funny guy. Probably more fit for the audience than Tavaré, though I prefer the latter.
Prediction:
The final five will be - Marcus, Iliza, Louis, Jeff and… um… um… I guess Ron G. (I split my votes Iliza, Jeff and Louis)
Adam’s set sucked, people don’t get Jim, and Sean? Where do we even start with him? Was he supposed to be channeling Meatloaf or what?
OK, so the final five are…
Marcus, Jim, Jeff, Louis, and Iliza. I was surprised Jim made it but my husband watched tonight and thought he was hilarious, so I guess it’s just me that doesn’t get him. I can’t object to this list. All five of them are talented, much moreso than last season’s finalists IMO.
I’m still rooting for Iliza for the win but wouldn’t object to Louis winning either. They are my two favorites.
Anyone else totally NOT in suspense for that last Sean v. Iliza reveal? C’mon. No contest, and I say that as someone who liked Sean.
So I wasn’t aware of the format change for this season. Usually there’s a one-by-one elimination for the finals and it goes 5-4-3-2-WINNER! instead of 5-WINNER! I guess it’s because NBC’s airing the Olympics this year.
I think all the comics but Louis got a distinct advantage at having only one finals competition instead of several. I think Louis would have had several strong sets since he’s the more experienced one, and the others might have hit repetition that would have hurt their chances. Not necessarily repeated jokes, but I think both Marcus’ and Jim’s style of jokes wouldn’t have lent themselves to an extended week-by-week single elimination. People would have tired of them like Jay London.
It’s hard to tell who’s going to pull it off. All five of them got serious "WOO!"age from the live audience, although I think Iliza and Jeff had the strongest WOO!age.
America definitely got it right this season, although it’s a shame Adam was eliminated because I think his set was his strongest of the season and I think he should have been in the finals instead of Marcus.
I think I’ll be okay with anybody other than Marcus winning, but my preference is Jeff or Louis to win.
I’m probably going to get shit for saying this but if this is all it takes to make a crowd laugh I should start writing my own material. What I saw tonight was a bunch of very raw comedians doing jokes that were either not funny at all, or very much out of date, or very much stolen from other comics.
Marcus has a little something going with that voice but he’s too much of a Dane Cook wannabe for me.
I want to like Jim Tavare but everytime he almost has me he says something to lose me. Like the one tonight about entering the young musician - that didn’t make sense, wasn’t funny, and was creepy.
Louis Ramey has been doing standup for 20 years and you haven’t heard of him for a reason.
Jeff Dye might have something in a few years. But maybe not. His act is about on par with the guys at the $5 open mic across town.
Iliza Shlesinger also might have something in a few years. She’s likable and damn nice to look at but just not all that funny yet.
And this is their top 5. Most of the people who didn’t make it were significantly worse. It’s insulting that they call these the funniest people in America on the promos.
Really? Okay, sure, maybe he looks like Dane Cook a little bit but stylistically I think his jokes are far from Dane Cook. In fact I think Adam Hunter’s way more like Dane Cook than Marcus was.
Because it’s hard to make it big as a stand-up comedian? I could be a professional cook for 20 years, and just because people don’t know me like Emeril doesn’t mean I’m a bad cook. I think Louis is clearly the most polished comedian of the group, you can tell he’s had experience just by his demeanor and the way he acted on the show.
I don’t think it’s that bad. Clearly some of the choices by the judges were off. God’s Pottery, Ron G, Papa CJ. But look at how America voted as soon as they were given the opportunity. They kicked out the two who had performed the worst, despite the pimping and overexposure NBC gave Sean Cullen.
What I’d like to see is them do a retooling of the format of the show. Have it be done in a more American Idol-style process. In season 2, there were two rounds of semi-finals: auditions created 40 semi-finalists. 40 was cut to 20, 20 was cut to 10 for the house. I think something like that, but with America voting would be great.
Get 40ish comedians. Have two shows of 15-20 comedians each, and America votes after each show. The top…oh, 7 of each group move on. Finals there are a group of 14. Each week 2 are eliminated until the final 4 and that’s the final voting group. In addition to that, to keep the show from just being a stand-up variety hour every week, you include themes for each week, like for example one week is “prop week.” Another week is “improv week” or something. After they get to the final 8 or something, it could just be free stand-up for whatever. This would challenge the comedians to keep their material fresh AND prove they can think on the fly.
I think it would really help the show to be done in that type of format. I haven’t met a fan of the show yet who actually thought Ron G deserved to be in the top 12.
Cooking is not meant to entertain an audience. Before cooking shows got popular on tv it was very, very rare for a chef to be famous or widely renowned, no matter how good they were. There are still amazing chefs out there we will never hear of. Louis can be polished into oblivion (and he is “polished” - good voice and comfortable on stage), but he’s not funny. Bottom line. His terror alert joke was done to death within the first year that thing was created, what - 6 or 7 years ago? A funny comedian would not fall back on an old, recycled joke as a pillar of the most important set of his life.
You should. I mean, put your money where your mouth is. Sounds like a SDMB Challenge. Those always go sooo well. I look forward to watching it.
I agree that they are not the funniest people in America. The funniest people in America have one hour specials on HBO or their own shows or whatever. These are supposed to be up and comers, not bigtimers yet. That’s how I look at it. Like on American Idol or Project Runway-- who’s going to be the next big thing, not who is already the big thing.
I don’t see the Dane Cook either. I think he’s pretty funny. I particularly liked his redux of Britney Spears in Willy WonkaLand. But is he funniest? I feel like we just haven’t seen enough challenges. This season is so compressed that the only comic I feel like I really know it Iliza.
Agree 100% but was starting to think I was alone in this.
He is hit or miss. His redneck joke tonight was LAME but he’s funny when he talks about sex and relationships.
Jeff Dye is just meh to me. Awfully cute, but not hilarious. Looking at his parents tonight, it’s hard to see where all his adorableness comes from (clearly something skipped a generation), but he is quite the eye candy. Not much funny though, more’s the pity.
I find her the most consistently funny of the bunch. She’s always right on, comes up with new material, had a fast pace, gets a lot of jokes out there. I’d like to see her win it. She was certainly the hardest working comic on the show.
I was also terribly disappointed at Sean’s performances in the competition. I think he is really the funniest guy of all, but he just didn’t know how to perform in this format.
Iliza is a very good comedian, IMHO. She was very underrated by the other comics, which I never really understood. Ron G. was terrible, and thought way too highly of himself. Papa CJ is a complete hack.
Now, for a viewership observation. I have a theory that the people who watch and vote on this show this season are actual standup fans (i.e. people who would actually go out to a club). I don’t know many people who watch this show, so I assume that only comedy fans do watch.
