No kidding. Now I’m more bummed that I discovered last week that you can’t vote on Friday morning What’s up with that? My mom voted on some show called Design Star, and you had 3 days to vote, and we couldn’t even cast votes 12 hours later.
Oh well. If Marcus or Jim win tonight, I’m going to be shocked. Any of the other three winning is fine by me. As much as Jeff’s adorableness makes me gooey, I think Iliza has a fair shot at being the first chick to win. But I like her 98% as much as him, so that’s cool too.
I thought it was interesting when Jeff, without prompting, explained to the audience why he laughs at his own jokes so much. That’s something I was going to comment on, and I’m sure lots of people on other message boards have commented on, and these guys evidently read the message boards.
Louis: he’s been doing this for twenty years. If the competition were to do a 30-45 minute set, he could probably do it. Why hasn’t he already made it big-time?
Tavare: He could do a long set too, I bet, but he won’t have the broadest appeal.
Marcus: Another one I WAG has a good deal of material.
Jeff & Iliza: both very talented, but would really struggle if given a 45-minute comedy special of their own.
I think it’s because she has been doing stand up for the least amount of time. Not counting the 4 who chose her in those elimination challenges.
I think there’s something in comedian circles about longevity. The longer you’ve done it, the more respect you deserve because you’ve ‘been there’.
She did mention it once during the show.
Amazing…every time the audience got their say this season, they got it right – something practically unheard of in reality TV. About the only thing I would’ve changed about the top five would be replacing Louis Ramey with Adam Hunter. Hunter was funnier, but Ramey is certainly more polished.
Gotta say, from where I stand there’s really no bad outcome tonight. I’ll be pulling for either Marcus (as long as he keeps laying off the impressions) or Jeff Dye, but I’ll be happy with any one of them winning.
The nice thing about the final five really struck me when I got an e-mail from the Count Basie Theater letting me know about their upcoming shows. The LCS tour will be stopping there, and these five will be performing. I never went to a LCS tour, because they always had at least one comic who I just couldn’t. fucking. stand. No way in hell was I going to shell out cash to have to sit through Lavell Crawford yelling “I’m fat! I’m black! Look! I’m fat! Look! I’m black!”. This time around, none of that…all of them are well worth it to me. See you five November 28th.
Well, after faithfully watching the show all season, the finale is pre-empted by some pre-season football. So I’m missing it. Will it be online? You guys can just spoil it for me. In fact, please do, as soon as you feel comfortable doing so.
Did they eliminate them in order of number of votes? Can anyone tell me the order of elimination? Also, was the rest of the show worth watching or was it a lot of filler around the reveals?
Oh hell yes! goes to find out if they’re coming nearby
Huh…there’s a closer venue (about 2 hours away) but it’s $300-$400 for a ticket. But a further venue away (about 4 hours) is only $80-$120 for a ticket. Maybe I can talk my folks into a weekend trip down to that area. I really want to see these five perform, man.
As for the winner…not surprised. A little disappointed, but not surprised.
I thought I’d be okay with whoever won, but at the end there, I was disappointed a little.
The ability to stomp back and forth across the stage telling rapid fire jokes works for a 3-minute routine, but I’d like someone who could stand still and entertain me for half and hour.
5th: Louis Ramey (really upset about this one)
4th: Jim Tavare
3rd: Jeff Dye
2nd: Marcus (seriously?)
1st: Iliza (not a surprise considering her edit on the show)
The show was mostly filler. There was about a 5-minute set by Jon Reep (last year’s winner) and he was alright. Jon Lovitz did about a 8-10 minute routine, and the final 2 each had a 3-minute routine near the end.
My personal top three of the five would have been:
3rd: Jeff Dye (funny enough, but more so rooting for the home town(WA) guy)
2nd: Eliza Shlesinger (good material, good stage presence)
1st: Jim Tavare (great style, I like “weird” comics; though I am surpised he did as well as he did with an American audience)
The editing of the show bugged the hell out of me though. It seemed like they were trying to paint it heavily, even down to the lighting of the reveal, that the main reason Eliza won was because she was a girl. Even she was stunned when they asked her ‘How it felt to be a role model for all the girls and how does it feel to win as a woman?’ “Daddy Shlesinger”? Really? She hardly got any credit at all for her comedy.
Yes she is a female, and yes she is attractive, so very, very attractive…ahem, but she was also funny and a great performer as well. She deserved better props
than she got. Plus she had to go to the material well far more than anyone else on the show; she earned her win.
…also, I have the biggest damn crush on her…
ETA:Oh yeah, I would, despite the story line they seemed to try and run with, still like to thank the producers for the clips of her in the swimsuit and getting out of bed. Damn.
I was shocked at that question and I was actually a bit proud of Iliza that she didn’t fall for the bait, but simply answered that it’s great to stand on stage and share your jokes, or something along that order. The “How does it feel to win as a woman”-card is a serious faux pas in Swedish television, it does very little but to diminish the contestant. Good for Iliza to stand above that.
Of course, that didn’t stop Bill Bellamy from going “Iliza! Our first female winner!” as the credits rolled. :smack:
That bothered me. If she won fair and square - good for her.
The show has a history of the producers possessing a secret voting power that can change the results, and Bellamy’s going on about her being the first woman LCS made me question whether that was a factor.
Finally watched the last episode today. I am so happy that Eliza won. Not just because she was definitely the funniest comic this season, but since woman seem to get pushed out asap every season and therefore she got challenged every single week, she held her own and kicked everyone’s ass with a NEW routine each episode.
Marcus was cool too, and I respect that there’s more to him than just doing impersonations, but I would have been sad if he beat Eliza. I was also rooting for Jim to win (although in his case, I wish he DID have more classical music jokes, since he also didn’t like repeating himself) and he looked very devastated to not.
Seeing Hickory perform again makes me even more pissed off that he managed to beat the Diabetes guy from last year. Him and Ralphie May (who is probably the all time funniest guy to be on the show) should team up and do a Second Place Fat Guy tour. I’m also glad that the God’s Pottery gimmick got shot down early and I got worried when they showed up at the opening of the last show.
I so wish that this show and American Idol’s role in pop culture were reversed.
I think that’s why she won-- she had the most exposure of any of them, and she always did new jokes with great energy. The strategy of “let’s keep challenging her so that she runs out of stuff” backfired, and putting her up there twice seems to have endeared her to the viewing audience. I know it worked on me. I admired her ability to pull it out every week while the rest of them sat on their asses.
This season was different from last-- we didn’t see the comics, aside from Iliza, perform very much. Did it seem like there were fewer improv challenges than last year?
I think the Olympics screwed it all up. The finale of LCS usually happens right around Labor Day, and I don’t think the show planners realized that NBC wasn’t gonna have ANY free slots open in August and had to compress the season.
Oh, and the shameless promotion of other televisions shows during the last two episodes was SHAMEFUL. Do they do that crap on American Idol too? Thanks NBC for reminding me why I never watch you during the regular season (30 Rock, SVU and The Office aside)
