Ok, thanks. My memory was him being alone for a few before he came across her.
The “main” cast of Last Man on Earth is good, and they tell good stories… but it’s definitely nice that this show is willing to do total about-faces and go completely out of left field like this. Hard to imagine Kristen Wiig joining the cast full time, and they have a history of killing off big names as jokes (Will Ferrell, Jon Hamm), so, curious to see where this goes.
Was there literally zero Will Forte on screen this entire episode? That must be a first.
I don’t remember, was Forte on screen at all in “Pitch Black”? I know there were references to when Mike & Tandy were younger but they may have been played by younger actors.
By the way, I added details from this episode to Wikipedia’s page on the United States presidential line of succession in fiction.
Wow, there’s a Wiki page for everything!
This weeks episode is not available on Comcast’s On Demand, and last week’s has vanished. The first part of season 3 is still there. Does anyone else have this problem?
With last night’s episode, this show is beginning to feel as if it were a: “what if on Gilligan’s Island there were dire consequences to every thing that Gilligan did?”
It’s tempting to blame Tandy for Lewis’s crash (and frankly, the sooner the group murders Tandy, the better off they’ll be), but unless there was some mechanical failure with the plane (which wouldn’t be too surprising if it had sat unused for several years and Lewis didn’t have the skills for a derailed preflight inspection), I’d have to blame Lewis himself.
As far as the gang knows, there are less than a dozen people alive on the planet. So it was an incredibly stupid risk for Lewis even to contemplate flying to Asia on the miniscule chance that Mark was still alive somewhere there. And it’s a very long path between taking off and landing in a small four-seater and making an ocean voyage.
But this show has never embraced the reality of their situation, perhaps because it’s too bleak and depressing.
Granted, flying to Asia in anything smaller than a 777 is nuts (and without tower support and updated weather maps, possibly suicidal even if the pilot wasn’t a complete amateur), but it wasn’t an inherently bad idea to learn to fly a small relatively simple 1969 Piper PA-28-140 (I looked it up) to do long-range aerial scouting up and down the coast for other survivors or resources. The group already knows there’s someone out there who controlled a drone, so they should be using those, too.
Just musing on it further, a far better plan for Lewis would be to find a luxury yacht like the Filippetti N35, which has a range of 4500 Nautical Miles, which would comfortably get him to Hawaii, where he’d have to hope to find enough diesel (the naval bases would be a good place to look) for the second leg to Japan. He could practice sailing it up and down the coast for a bit to practice navigating (by GPS if available), pack lots of extra fuel and food for emergencies, and though the speed is only a tenth that of a Piper (which, frankly, has nowhere near enough range to attempt a Pacific crossing, unless you’re willing to fly all the way up to Alaska, hop the Aleutians, and come down the Siberian coast, hoping you can find literally dozens of refueling stations along the way) it will be a lot safer and more comfortable.
But, y’know… we’re operating by TV comedy rules.
Yeah, I had a similar thought, as Lewis was getting prepared to fly I kept thinking, does anyone here know about airplanes and airplane engine maintenance? Is there enough useable fuel left?
To be fair, of these survivors, just what are their skills? If they had successfully operated on Phil or if Lewis successfully flown the plane, it would be unrealistic. It’s not as if there’s a doctor, scientist, mechanic, etc… among the bunch.
Reviewing the crash scene, the plane dips really abruptly with only a momentary roll. It doesn’t look like a stall (I claim no expertise whatsoever)… maybe the elevator and flaps controls failed simultaneously, putting the elevator at maximum down and the flaps at full?
The instant fireball, I figure, is pure Hollywood.
I kinda think Lewis shoulda taxied around the field for a while, just to see if there were any obvious problems.
They fixed the On Demand problem and I was finally able to watch it. My first thought, like others here, was about maintenance.
Could any plane sit on the ground unused for that long and be safe to fly? I’m no expert but I highly doubt it.
Could Lewis have learned enough to make it flight ready again? Certainly not just from flying a simulator. I suppose he could have found and read some manuals but it doesn’t seem like that would be sufficient.
It looks like Gail is still alive and may survive due to Tandy’s stupid stunt with the lights.
It looks though, like she may be in bad shape. Is it due to thirst and hunger? Maybe she did shoot herself but only succeeded in causing an injury.
I doubt that they’ll discover her in the open elevator in time. She’ll have to rouse herself and crawl out to where they can find her.
I suppose if Lewis was even slightly mechanically-inclined and had all the time he wanted to practice in the simulator and could find service manuals and had the wherewithal to do a moderately thorough preflight inspection, he could probably roughly handle a Piper 28 (my research indicates this is a fairly easy plane to learn, as planes go) in perfect weather conditions and full daylight. I’d never expect him to be able to fly on instruments, handle an emergency, or do a complete teardown, so the first time he encounters a problem of any kind - blammo. Forget an ocean crossing, he probably would have done a fair amount of damage to the plane just trying to land it on a perfectly smooth and dry runway.
At the very least, he should have been wearing a helmet instead of a soft cap.
My turn to complain about On Demand.
Last week’s episode didn’t record on my DVR. I set it, but the next day it was listed as a different show and the recording was that different show. I didn’t remember what it was supposed to be so I erased it and forgot about it.
This week’s show recorded fine, but the “previously on” clued me in that I missed last week’s episode, which is not currently available On Demand.
So now I guess I just get to wait, checking On Demand each day to see if last week’s episode ever shows up.
Lewis has really bad luck with air travel, doesn’t he.
Agreed that going be sea would be better than flying to Japan. On the other hand I actually Tandy actually managed to come up with a tribute that was decent & touching. Plus it might just have saved Gail’s life.
[QUOTE=Meltdown]
Am I alone in assuming that Pamela is just going to die? We know from Tandy’s brother that the virus is still active, so Pamela will likely contract it (assuming she’s not immune) before we catch up to the present day in the next episode. I wouldn’t be surprised if we never saw her again.

While I doubt Kristen Wiig is actually going to join the cast, I’m pretty certain we’ll see Pamela again. It would be downright bizarre if she never showed up again given how her episode ended with her cleaning herself up and setting out to find the group. Granted she may not actually find them, but who knows. Plus it was really nice to see a woman do the whole “give up & descend into madness cut off from civilization” thing that we usually only get to see men do.
What did Carol see in the background of the family photo? My screen is too small to tell. Was it a person?
It looked like someone in a gillie suit to me. Reminded me of the alleged Big Foot pictures.
