Last Man on Earth (tv series)

In what sense is Phil now the last man on Earth?

I’m thinking that something may happen to Todd, but only after Melisa is pregnant (so Phil can’t make an argument that it’s necessary for him to be with her).

Meh… Show is losing me quickly for the reasons already stated. Phil is totally unlikeable now. When everyone is acting normal the show is good. When Phil goes all dickhead it’s very off putting. Not in a funny way either.

Too bad. The show started great. Now it’s turning into another good idea gone bad for Fox (Utopia).

I have no problem with an unlikeable protagonist. I just wish the story around him was about more than who gets to bone whom.

I’m still liking it. But they can’t just keep having unexpected arrivals, can they? And that’s what’s kept it fun, at least for me.

What else can they do from this point? What plots can they have? There’re no other people. There’s no society for them to interact with.

They can’t spend an episode waiting for a table in a Chinese restaurant. They can’t spend an episode getting lost in a parking garage (well I suppose they could, but it’d be boring as hell). It can’t just be Phil constantly hitting on Melissa, can it?

Hopefully the writer’s will continue being able to surprise us every week, but I’m skeptical.

So Phil is still a jerk, and I was actually thinking in the first episode that maybe they are overplaying it. Phil is going into really unlikable land (when driving Todd into the desert), but I think it was saved by Phil realizing that while he’s selfish and wants what Todd has, he doesn’t want to be THAT bad of a person. Which is an interesting dynamic.

The scene going back and forth in the truck while Todd is smiling and waiting for Phil was just hilarious.

And the scene with Todd wanting Phil to take credit for finding the cow was great as well - made you wonder if part of the jerkiness of Phil is because he hasn’t gotten much gratitude (though his behavior tends to deep six any attempts at that, I guess) - he was the one who went all over the country and put “ALIVE IN TUSCON” everywhere after all.

I think we’re into meta territory now with the idea that Melissa wouldn’t be with him even if he were “the last man on earth.”
It’s odd that they are burning off episodes two at a time, it makes me think they just want to be done with the show.

I could see Todd and Melissa going on a “vacation” and leaving for a while. We see some scenes of Carol and Phil going about their business…Phil regrows his beard.
Melissa and Todd show back and we see its years later and they have a gaggle of kids while Carol and Phil are still childless. Then in the distance you see a mini-van driving toward them. It stops with another family with kids–another schlub with a hot wife. Phil stays miserable. End of show.

Though the ratings are actually pretty good for the show. So I don’t think there is any threat of it being canceled.

I have been watching on and off but istm that Todd thanking Phil will go a long way towards making Phil less of a creeper jerk.

Phil with his “type 2 lactose intolerance; the worst kind” had me laughing.

Mellisa has his number now and sees through nearly all of his lies (except for when Todd backs him up), and she isn’t afraid to call him on them.

She even saw through his hiding the cow and figured out where he probably put it. It was only dumb luck, and the unwitting complicity of Todd, that got him off the hook on that one.

What’s going to happen with the porta potty? He’ll have to empty it. He’ll probably start emptying it into the pool.

And I guess they’re going to feed and milk the cow in that upstairs room - and clean up after it.

Same here- this latest episode pretty much cemented it for me. Phil isn’t just unlikeable, he’s downright despicable. At this point, I don’t even want to see him redeem himself- I just want someone to kill him off.

Todd will, who is the Last Man on Earth.

I think everyone except Todd has no idea how to live with other people after being apart from social niceties for 2 years. I mean while Phil is a jerk, there really is no reason to blast a song during sex during all hours of the night while living next door to other people who can likely hear everything since there is no other ambient noise. And Carol is just as duplicitous as anyone else as well.

So really, it isn’t just Phil who is a jerk - he’s just the one we follow. Todd is the only decent person of the bunch (and that may be the most unrealistic part - he likely should also have his anti-social tendencies from not seeing anyone for 2 years).

Thinking about it, Carol was pretty despicable herself with that cow stunt.

Todd is naive, easily led, and blind to duplicity. It seems like Mellisa may be the only real adult on the show.

ETA. After reading ISiddiqui’s post, it’s true that Mellisa can be pretty selfish also.

Phil’s gotta change if this show is to remain watchable. He needs to get the fuck over Melissa and leave her the hell alone or my annoyance with him is going to turn to hate.

And Melissa in her own way is hard for me to like too.

As far as the cow situation is concerned. Cows need to be pregnant in order to produce milk. So their source of milk is going to disappear as soon as this cow gives birth.

You got that a little mixed up. They produce milk for a period of time after giving birth. Wouldn’t be to useful otherwise.

I thought once you started milking them, they just kept going.

Oh of course. So their cow has to have recently given birth. In any case their milk supply will run out eventually.

I think they slow down production considerably, possibly stopping eventually. Googling shows me that commercial milk cows are calved once a year.

I was wondering about the milk production. They need to find a bull if they want to continue having milk. Even then, I’m guessing that production will stop while the cow’s pregnant. I suppose they can stock up on cheese.

One little thing I noticed that made me laugh. Phil was making a sandwich…using a poptart. Funny as a sight-gag on any show but here it makes sense. Of course all the manufactured bread would be gone by now, if you want something close to a sandwich…poptart is your option.
