Yesterday we had a scorcher in Sydney, with the temperature reaching 40C. It hadn’t cooled down greatly when my local parish’s Advent carol service started last night. The music was the usual mix of traditional and more recent carols - but we really struck a problem when we got to “In the Bleak Midwinter”. As we sang “frosty wind made moan”, “earth stood hard as iron”, “snow had fallen” etc and the sweat trickled down our faces we all just started laughing uncontrollably at the ludicrousness of the whole situation. Of course, that started the congregation off too. The joys of a summer Christmas!
