From “The Star Trek Encyclopedia”…
Paramilitary organization of former Federation citizens formed at the colonies affected by the border changes wrought by the Federation-Cardassian Treaty of 2370. The Maquis grew in response to Cardassian hostilities toward these colonies and to the perception that they had been abandoned by the Federation government…A number of Starfleet officers were sympathetic to the Maquis situation and either provided them with weapons, or left Starfleet to join their ranks.
Paris was a member of the Maquis, as was Chakotay.
A footnote: After the Cardassians began their ill-fated alliance with the Dominion (the people from the other side of the wormhole), the two joined forces and wiped out all the Maquis in their space.
Ok thanks people, I just read all I needed from www.startrek.com. I should learn to simply look harder for information rather than simply posting here.
But then again you all make it so easy (sometimes)
later
From your spelling of the word “maquis”, I’m thinking that maybe you are not aware of the word’s origin. Maquis is the name of a dense scrubland vegetation in Mediterranean regions. It is also used as the name of resistance groups that fought against the Nazis in occupied Europe during WWII (the fighters were hiding in the hills or the bushes, hence the name maquis.) The name “maquis” was mostly used for the French resistance.
In my defense I had to spell it out based upon how I have heard it pronounced on the show.
Then why didn’tcha just spell it “mockee”?
Also, the Star Trek Maquis first appeared in the later (6? 7?) seasons of TNG, not DS9. (Ensign Ro Laren from the Enterprise infiltrated them at one point.)
Eschew Obfuscation
The first appearance of the Maquis in any Star Trek series was “The Maquis,” a Deep Space Nine two-parter that aired April 24, 1994. It was subsequently mentioned in the second-to-last episode of The Next Generation, “Preemptive Strike,” which aired May 16, 1994.
Voyager sucks.
Other geeky tidbits to add to the confusion:
The Cardassians as a race first appeared in “The Wounded” (TNG January 28, 1991)
The Bajorans first appeared in “Ensign Ro” (TNG October 7, 1991)
A low-ranking Bajoran officer is sent on a dangerous mission (not involving the Maquis) in “Lower Decks” (TNG February 7, 1994)
We learn of a Federation-Cardassian treaty which leaves both Federation and Cardassian colony worlds in enemy territory, forcing evacuation, in “Journey’s End” (TNG March 28, 1994)
Hmm…ok, guess I was wrong.
Eschew Obfuscation
This brings up something that’s bugged me for a bit - I’m sure in all the stuff I read about the Bajorans at about that time, the spelling was B’jor and B’joran. Then when DS9 comes around the apostrophy became an a. Was I hallucinating? Misremembering?
