Am I the only person here that is going to miss him so much? Especially since he has said he’s leaving, he is consistently some of the most hysterically funny, odd, at this point I don’t give a shit I will say anything adult swim comic fun.
I really cannot describe it if you aren’t watching it now.
More than half the show is him riffing with the guy playing Geoff the gay robot (the phone bits? omg Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon flies kill me). The thing with the pantomime horse?
He’s about to end and yeah, it’s some other white dude and that’s a bummer. (I say as a white woman who would also like to see diversity.)
From the last few days (I watch it on DVR often) He and Michael Sheen talking about Medieval Times. His bits about Rothko, Taylor Swift and Pollock. He’s going out on top I think.*
I consistentally laugh at the silliness.
*I had an argument with The Fella about Letterman, that he should’ve stopped years ago like Ferguson, b/c he stopped being funny. The Fella argued and I said, “You haven’t watched Letterman in years, b/c I don’t watch him”
So he agreed I was right when I recorded a few shows and he watched.
I am definitely going to miss the show. I love him, his insanity, Geoff (Josh Robert Thompson), the regular guests who really understand the tone of the show, and the way he rails frustratingly against the stupid limitations US Network TV throws up at him.
And I think this last point is the real reason he’s decided to go, and I suspect he may have plans to continue his madness on a cable network where he will finally have some freedom. He has said he’s not retiring, that wherever he goes he’ll be taking Geoff and Secratariat with him, and I think he’s being literal about that. I live in hope, at least.
Hasn’t he been doing the show something like 10 years?
I only started watching in the last couple years (but thank you, YouTube, for past clips) and I’ll miss him but I’d rather he go do something else now than stay there until he’s rusting in place.
Loved it, till the robotic skeleton. That got really old, really quick, for me. Still like him enjoy the monologue and interview. But somedays as soon as the robot appears, click, I’m done with that!
I think he has enormous talent, and will go on to bigger and better things. I think he’s bored with the format too.
He seems a decent guy and I do like the anarchic edge to his show. As anarchic as you can get away with on a Network talk show. Unfortunately I don’t find him that funny. He descends far too often into sexual double entendres when chatting to his guests. Im fairly libertarian so im not saying this as a prude. Just as someone who doesn’t enjoy Ferguson’s attempts at getting a cheap laugh.
As a Scotsman who remembers Ferguson’s earlier incarnation in the 1980’s comedy circuit it has been bizarre to see the route his career has gone. I do wish him all the best.
I kind of miss the hand puppets, and he hasn’t done a lip-sync musical number in forever, but otherwise the past few weeks have been really entertaining, because clearly nobody gives a shit anymore, and they’re running with it.
It would be nice if Kristin Bell makes one final appearance, even though she’s not listed on any of the remaining shows on my program guide. Maybe she’s too pregnant? Or she’ll be a surprise guest on the final show.
I’ll miss him and I really wish they just let him have absolute control over his format. I think he would mix comedy with actual serious interviews and because Craig is extremely smart and funny, it would be great.
Very few people out there have hosted a late night show, written a novel, made stand-up DVD’s, directed a feature film, and recovered from alcoholism.
He did a fireside chat thing with her that aired recently and I’m hoping she’ll be a surprise guest too. The TV Guide listings showed her as a guest a couple weeks ago but the guest list on CBS’s site said differently which made me wonder if she had been scheduled to be a guest and she couldn’t make it for some reason. It’s going to be weird next year when Jimmy Kimmel will be the current network late night host who’s been around the longest. I’m going to miss Craig a lot though. His show has been my favorite late night one for quite awhile.
I started watched him after he’d been on for a year, probably a good thing since I’ve heard that - like many others - his first year was very rough. He was unlike everyone else, fresh, inventive, and willing to try everything.
That worked fine for about four years. Then you could see that he stopped caring about doing new stuff, because the audience responded better to the same old. So for five years he’s pounded the same old into the ground. I stopped watching except for a few shows with guests I wanted to see. Those haven’t been much good either.
That’s a lot like Carson and Letterman. I gave up on Carson ten years before he retired because he gave up, too. Letterman had many years in the middle of his CBS run when he was unwatchable, pounding the same stupid jokes into the ground. He managed to mostly turn that around over the past few years. a huge surprise.
The expectations on a new host are almost impossible. Conan’s first year was legendarily bad. Leno needed two years to turn his show around. Seth Meyers is just beginning to find his feet. The pressure on Colbert will be killing, so it’s a good thing he probably won’t be taking over until September, months after Dave quits and after months of guest hosts he’ll definitely be better than.
I wish Fallon were leaving instead. How that guy got the Tonight Show, I’ll never understand.
I haven’t watched much Ferguson lately, or any late night talk shows for that matter, but back when I did, he was top notch. Right up there with Conan. Johnny’s still king of all time, though.
I hope he does - they all have great chemistry. I absolutely love it when Josh Robert Thompson makes Craig crack up so hard that he can’t stop laughing.
I was wondering when Kristen Bell was going to show up in one of the last episodes, too - she and Betty White both seemed to be really special to Craig.
We’re going to miss Craig terribly - we don’t bother with any late night tv but him. And yes, he is terribly smart - he doesn’t seem to like letting it show, but he is.
