Lateral Thinking Puzzles. Let's do it again!

**To help with a fundraiser, a woman donated a pair of socks. The socks were pulled apart into threads and the threads from these socks were each attached to a commemorative card and the cards sold to raise money. What were the cards commemorating? **

×××××

No.

Is religion relevant?

(the socks being pulled into individual threads calls to mind the procedures often used with holy relics of saints)

Did the donor own/use the socks at the time of the initial event?

Was she herself involved in the event?

Was the event to do with exploration/“discovering” something?

Were Native Americans involved in a significant way?

Were the charity and the event related to each other or was it just that this was a cool way for them to raise money?

No.

amendment to an earlier reply to SurrenderDorothy

Was it one event or was it something broader?
*I think upon further research I like the one event answer better. **

*There is, it seems, a wee bit of historical debate about the accuracy of the original event that would lead years later to a pair of socks donated to a charity fundraiser. But I choose to scoff at the doubters because it does not change the essence of the riddle.

Was the original event something that would have been recognized as noteworthy as it was taking place or something that was only recognized later?

Was it something that was planned/intentional or something that just happened by chance or unexpectedly?

Did it primarily involve women? Or just that one woman? Or a pretty even mix?

Hmmmm. Was it related to sports? The founding of an organization? The creation of something? The construction of something?

Is the charity one that still exists?

Would knowledge of what the charity was be relevant to solving the puzzle?

reply to SurrenderDorothy:

Was the original event something that would have been recognized as noteworthy as it was taking place or something that was only recognized later? Not sure how to answer this. Arguments can be made either way. I’ll go with recognized later, but it was certainly noted by some at the time.

Was it something that was planned/intentional or something that just happened by chance or unexpectedly? Unexpectedly, though given what we know it was predictable thus not really chance.

Did it primarily involve women? Not primarily. Or just that one woman? **One woman is certainly more noted. You know of her. **Or a pretty even mix? Not sure. But I think a mix.

Hmmmm. Was it related to sports? No The founding of an organization? NoThe creation of something? No The construction of something? No.

Is the charity one that still exists? No. It was a fundraiser that would have stopped once the needed funds were raised.

No, not unless you already had the special knowledge or used Google. Otherwise there is no discoverable connection.

Was the woman African American?
Native American?

No to both.

Were the socks worn by a key person involved in the commemorated event?

Were they worn during the event?

Were the socks any more relevant to the event than any other article of clothing would have been?

Were the socks worn by a key person involved in the commemorated event? No

Were they worn during the event? No

Were the socks any more relevant to the event than any other article of clothing would have been? Yes

Was the event science-related?
Was there some form of art other than visual art involved? (For some reason, I’m stuck on Mary Shelley/Frankenstein/The Year Without a Summer, but it doesn’t really fit)
Was the woman a professional of some sort (nurse, teacher)?
Was she an activist?
Was she noted mostly for her courage? Compassion? Creativity? Intellect? Luck? Association with someone else?
Do we know her pretty much entirely because of this event or do we know her from other things and she just also happened to be involved here?
Have there been movies made about the event?
Were the socks used during the event but not worn?
Did the event take place in the north or south?
East or west?

Was the person with whom she was associated a man?
Was she a first lady? The wife of a politician? The wife or daughter of an otherwise famous/notable man?
Was this person also notable primarily for his (I assume his) involvement in the event or for other things?
Was the sock donor an adult at the time of the initial event?
Was the event between 1800-1820? 1821-1840? 1841-1860?
Is the initial event something that most Americans would have been taught about in school?
Is the event something that people outside the US would probably know about if they did not have a special interest in history?

**[spoiler]

I will even go further. The woman’s home was once considered a historic site because she had lived there. (Alas the home was destroyed in a fire). There is a famous recording about the initial event that you can listen to on Youtube. If those socks were around today they would belong in a museum IMHO— maybe even the Smithsonian.

I have to go to work soon and I am sure someone is about to get this. Use the spoiler to confirm or help as I cannot answer questions for a few hours.

Betsy Ross’ socks? Commemorating something with the flag?

*I was under the impression Betsy Ross did not really design the flag, but still…
