Latest Trend in Neck Ties? Yuk!

I’ve noticed too many guys wearing neckties that EXACTLY MATCH the color of their shirts to the point where the tie is really lost. They can’t all be bad dressers, so it this the latest trend? Disgusting!

Man, I totally opened this thread expecting to see that super annoying trend of wearing a spread collar with a tie that’s not wide/fat enough for it. I’m seeing that everywhere now and it’s pissing me off.

I remember this being a style back (briefly) in the early 1970’s. Didn’t like it then, either.

Hey, as long as we’re passed the solid-color (and shiney!) shirt with the different (and in no way matching…I don’t think) solid-color (and also shiney) tie combo fad, it’s an improvement.

They still wear ties? Why?

Sorry, but I actually really like it, especially in black. No shiny, two-toned shirts, though. Or wide ties with cartoons on them.

No, the “latest trend in neckties” that I can’t fathom (or stand) is the “woven cloth, skinny knit tie with squared off end” look. Like this. Which are featured in the current J. Crew Catalog.

Blecch.

Ooooh, those knit ties are soooo early eighties…that’s when I bought one for my then-husband. I rather liked it…it was much better than what he used to wear. But the tone-on-tone thing hasn’t hit Cleveland yet, I don’t think. Got a link to a pic?

I had a flat-bottomed skinny knit tie like that as a kid in the mid-'80s. I remember I wore it when I won some writing contest in elementary school. Never thought that style would come back!

Regis Philbin wore a lot of monochromatic shiny shirt/tie combos when he hosted Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? back around 2000. I think that really brought the style into the public eye, and he may have even had his own line for a while.

Right. I still have my knit ties from the early '80s, which were copied from ties in the late '50s-early '60s. And yes, Regis brought back the monochrome look . . . he didn’t really bring it back, but he was the first to popularize it, undoubtedly the show’s wardrobe person, rather than Regis himself. I agree that it can be nice in black or gray, depending on what else is worn.

Fourth row down.

Ick.

Me kinda likee  The one on the left, fifth row down is total snazz, man.

I don’t think it looks bad at all. It seems to me a good way to wear dress up with the tie but to do so with a sleek look. The tie doesn’t always have to pop from the shirt to look good. IMO.

Mods, please check into the OP. It seems like a post from the 90’s is just now showing up on the board.

Since when is Regis’s GrrAnimals approach to shirt / tie combinations the latest trend?

Are we at least done with the douchebags who wear dress shirts with over-starched collars that are a different color for no reason? Because I fucking hate that. If you’re going to wear a shirt and a tie, your god damn shirt can be one color, asswipe.

I’m actually kinda glad society has decided to move this way. A hidden necktie is one more step towards not actually having to wear one.

Oh man, the shiny silver on silver is sold out.

As a guy, that is fucking horrendous. I pride myself on finding some good shirt/tie combos and NEVER using the pre-made combo packs.

I don’t wear a tie to work, but if I did, I wouldn’t wear one that looked like a sock!

You mean the swing-shift assistant grocery store manager sock tie? The funny thing is that Narrowties admits to selling leftovers from the 80s, which also explains that painful color scheme.

Agreed, the latest yuk trend in hangman’s nooses…err…ties is that they still exist, they need to go the way of the Dinosaur…

that’s really what killed the dinosaurs, not a meteor impact, not smoking (per Gary Larson), but strangulation via necktie, the T-Rex was especially susceptible, what with it’s stubby little arms

back in high school in the 80’s, when I was forced to wear ties (school dress code) I matched the tie and shirt as closely as possible, because I hated wearing the things, and wanted it to look like I wasn’t wearing one
