Laws of dying?

My Dad has had a major stroke and his wife has made the decision that a feeding tube is to be inserted into him to keep him alive. He has been in ICU for a week now and they have weaned him off of a ventilator and he is now able to breathe on his own.

As of now we do not know if he is “there.” He isn’t really responding to commands and/or our questions (although in my heart I think he can hear us), and he isn’t moving anything but his neck and his eyes.

His wife said they had talked about this before and that his wish was not to be kept alive by machines.

I don’t know what my wishes are for him because I love him and don’t want to see him live like this, nor do I want to let him go either. But I know he would hate every second of his existence if he knows this is his fate.

I know there was a case going on about a woman, her husband, and her parents and it related to a feeding tube. Does anyone have a link to that or their names so I could look it up? Are there laws in the state of CA about this and how all this works?

Thank you.

The case in hand is Terri Schiavo. Here’s a volunteer website siding with her family

Google “Terry Schiavo” and you will get all sorts of info.

I hope you can find peace during this most troubling time.

Thank You BobT, and thank you both for the links, there seems to be a lot of information there.
