I am looking for an analysis of this painting. My forte is not art or looking it up using Google. I hoping someone with more experience on this topic could help me out. Thank you in advance.
The Monet, you mean? An analysis? What do you mean?-- it’s not really very complicated. It’s Venice-- maybe the side of the Doge’s palace. . . it’s late impressionism. What kind of analysis are looking for? I think the closest you could get to a real analysis would be formal-- color theory, etc.
This isn’t for an art appreciation term paper, is it. . . .?
His profile says he’s at an AFB, so unless he’s an Armed Services brat…
I did look around a bit earlier in the day, but I didn’t see anything offhand online that sounds like what you’re looking for. I’m assuming you’re looking for some sort of art critic stuff, explaining the painting? Didn’t see anything like that, offhand, but then I didn’t devote a whole lot of time to it.
Two choices–go down to the library and get a book on Monet, or Google it.
Or, of course, wait until someone shows up with a link to an art critic Monet website.
Well, it is for a paper. The paper is not being done by me. A friend asked me if I could find any information on the piece. I looked and looked but faithful google yielded no results. So I turned to my well qualified dopers for some clues.
I would like to find any information available.
Thanks for responding. I didn’t think anyone would.
I couldn’t find much either-- my guess is that the prof purposefully chose largely undiscussed works so that people couldn’t lift essays from the web (last term 3 of the 17 essays I got on Monet were pastiches of website discussions). So. . . an essay by your friend I think should briefly discuss Monet’s work in Venice in general as an introduction, describe the work in detail (he or she CAN do this-- don’t rely on other’s descriptions-- what colors are used? what’s the subject? how is it framed? what is the brushwork like? how much detail does he use to define objects? etc), explain what typical traits of impressionist works are, how this piece works into that (does it fit the usual criteria for impressionism, re: style, subject matter?), and maybe think about whether Monet’s style has changed much by this point in his career-- is the brushwork tighter or has his sense of color changed, etc. (depending on how long the paper should be).
Maybe this will help, although it’s more. . um. . pedagogic than we were looking for.

Oh, as an afterthought on information about the piece, my guess is that the assignment is a visual analysis and NOT a research project, so your friend really shouldn’t worry too much about factual information about Monet’s biography or the history of the picture, etc. The meat of the essay should come from just LOOKING at the painting itself-- everything you need to explain is there and for a formal analysis paper too much factual detail (“in 190? Monet traveled to Venice with his friends blah blah”) will seem like skirting the real question and padding.
