Learned a new word today

Thanks to an article in Economist:

irredentist

What words have you learned lately?

Wow, that doesn’t mean anything like what it looks like. I thought it was going to be something along the lines of “one who does not take care of his teeth.”

Neat. No new words for me lately.

Heh. I read the title as: Learned a new word: today. Irredentist is much cooler than today.

It’s a new word to me! Gracias.

Dentition is a lot closer, but still not what you think. It’s not a person.

Naif: a naive or inexperienced person.

In our elevator they have a screen displaying ad’s and news. One of them is a word of the day. Naif was today’s word.

A while back I encountered the word “retromingent” in a crossword and was impressed that it meant “pissing backwards” which is what big male cats (e.g. tigers) do. I even persuaded the Managing Director of a company to say it in a formal meeting with the government department that I work for, just for a laugh.

I recently learned ‘copacetic’.

Interesting word. It looks like it’s Greek or something, but World Wide Words claims it’s of American origin whose derivation is currently unknown.

Thanks for the cool word. I used it in an email this morning and just got a “I don’t think that word means what you think it does” reply.
