Least Horrible Sunscreen Recommendations Please

Maybe check out some of the “natural” baby sunscreens. They seem to be pretty mild, have high SPF, and probably won’t leave you smelling like a tropical drink.

If only I had known sooner.

I wouldn’t say Environmental Working Group is exactly “science.” They tend to be pretty hysterical, and will cherry-pick evidence so they can ride their toxin hobbyhorse. AFAIK, there’s a lot more solid evidence that sun exposure and sunburns lead to bad health outcomes than any notion that the chemicals in sunscreen are harmful.

And if you want something that isn’t gloppy and sticky, you need to steer clear of titanium/zinc oxide creams. They’re good for sensitive skin issues, but they are definitely thicker and leave a noticeable residue.

I use the aforementioned Olay facial moisturizer with SPF 15, topped with Neutrogena’s mineral powder foundation, which adds an additional 20 SPF (IIRC), and gives a nice non-sticky, non-shiny finish. Both are fragrance-free too.

If I’m swimming, I go for something gloppier that will stay on for at least a short time in the water.

I really like Paula Begoun’s review site, Beautypedia, for picking good skin care products. She’s very evidence-based, and she always points out (disapprovingly) when products have added fragrance.

good to know.

I like Bullfrog. Clear, not greasy, slightly citrusy smell. I put it on before biking, and it works well under sweaty conditions.
