I’m a sun-cream resister. Hate the stuff. I just try to avoid direct sunlight. Of course, every year, there comes a time when it’s simply impractical to avoid the sun altogether, and so I get burned.
Today, I decided to try to get past my aversion, and spent 15 minutes suspiciously eyeing tubes of unguents in the drug store, before leaving empty-handed. They all either listed “fragrance” as an inactive ingredient, or simply stunk when I tentatively popped the cap to give it a sniff.
I’m not looking for a tanning lotion. I want something that offers some protection but doesn’t make me feel like a greasy, conspicuously-perfumed yobbo while I’m going about my regular daily routine.
Does such a thing exist?
I am experimenting with Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock. It comes in SPF 30 and 45 and is made with Parsol 1789. I break out easily and have had much trouble in the past with finding a sunblock, but I think this one is going to work. It is not greasy at all.
p.s. – It is very lightly scented, but the scent fades away quickly.
Ocean Potion Baby Block SPF 50. I don’t know if SPF 50 is too high for you (to me, it’s just barely enough :(), but I adore this stuff; so much so that I buy two or three bottles a time.
There’s absolutely no scent whatsoever. It’s a cream (as opposed to a gel), but it feels almost like water going on and absorbs quickly. I seriously can’t feel that I’m wearing sunblock after a minute or two. The only drawback is that it leaves my face looking a bit shiny (I just use face powder for that or ignore it though), but if you’re a guy, I don’t know how concerned with that you are.
Make sure to get the Baby Block. The other products that I’ve used are scented (like Orange Creamsicles, which was a nice change of pace from crappy coconut, but it’s still scented).
Thanks, ratatoskK– I poked about and see that it is also fragrance-free. I guess “non-comedogenic” is a good thing, too, although I didn’t know what it meant until this very minute.
I don’t believe they had it at the drug-store 'round the bend, but I’m sure I’ll be able to find it at a nearby monster chain store.
(Gotcher PS on preview-- I’m guessing the light scent is just the natural smell of the stuff – so long as it isn’t loaded with perfume I’m a happy man. I’d rather peel than pong, when it comes right down to it.)
Thanks for the backup, zweisamkeit.
