Leave Porn Alone!

The first time I heard this usage it made sense, it was in reference to some footage of an Anti-Globalisation protest. One guy had made a coherent documentary telling the story of I think it was the Genoa 2000 protests, another guy had just stitched together a load of footage of the protestors rioting and the police responding with force. This made an impression but as a friend pointed out it was “riot porn”, just violence that stimulates in some way sans context, reason, or real political point.

I also like poverty porn for the glossy pictures of starving Africans that you see in the lifestyle sections of “socially aware” newspapers, ie The Guardian and Sunday Times UK. I think the context is important, they’re selling you new fondue sets while you look at pictures of children dying.

Generation Porn

X-Treme.

But Pussy Porn is redundant!

This is all just another stepping stone into getting hardcore porn into general society.

With an attitude!

I actually think “torture porn” is pretty apt. That’s the only one I’ve heard much. But I also like An Gadaí’s description of “riot porn” and “poverty porn”. I think

is well said.

Here ya go. http://www.flickr.com/photos/11340931@N04/1098094708/
Safe for work, by the way.

Whew. And here I thought this was a thread about having to shave my palms. I’ll be over here um… I’ll be over here if you need me.

So you’re all right with Furniture Porn?

Oh, and here’s another one - my brother refers to some television programmes as “weather porn”, meaning the programmes that are there so one can sit cosily at home in a good safe house with tea and biscuits etc while watching other people have hurricanes and floods and wild stuff like that.

If it’s any comfort, my guess is that this type of usage will last only a little time then disappear.

[Edited to add - yes, of course that link is very SFW]

Torture-Porn is the one that bothers me the most. To me, it sounds like the people using the term, in reference to a group of new horror movies that show a lot of violence and gore, were definetly trying to paint those movies with the broad brush of a ‘porn’ lable. As pornographic material can be censored, let us call this porn so we can say it shouldn’t be made/shown/viewed.

Has anyone besides me noticed that gun and ammo magazines share many fetish properties with some of the trashier porn? I don’t mean like Playboy or something glossy like that. I mean something you’d find at some mildly disreptuble convenience store, vaguely behind the counter.

Gun-porn.

But, yeah – we might be headed toward having to specify “sex-porn”.

All we are saaaying,
Is leave porn alone!

That’s not the bible, that’s Guideposts.

I am a pornographer !

You have the Bible Belt, and you have the Porn Belt.

True dat.

Actually, “torture porn” refers to a specific trend that many people find objectionable and disturbing. Modern horror movies have become very sadistic lately. Some of them (like, for example, Saw II and House of 1000 Corpses) are little more than tableaus of human suffering. Basically, it’s not a scary story, it’s a cruel story.
