I know there are already 2 lebron threads (one started by me), but I’ll go ahead and make this one too so that two separate “he’s back its a good/bad move” conversation can be combined into one.
If I’m way off base Mods feel free to kill this, but I thought it might be easier this way
So now the dominoes will finally start to fall. It sounds like the Cavs are determined to get Kevin Love in a trade involving Andrew Wiggins. Houston will complete the Omer Asik to New Orleans deal and trade Jeremy Lin, probably to Philly, so they can sign Chris Bosh. And they will keep Chandler Parsons. No decision from Carmelo yet. Miami now has a bunch of cap room if they want to try to reassemble a team around Wade and chase guys like Deng or Stephenson, or even Gasol, although he’s probably going to a certified contender. Or else it’s going to be a weird rebuild: Josh McRoberts has to feel like a jerk right now, for one.
Maybe at the deadline, but the Cavs have more of a roster in place than the Heat did at this point in 2010. I don’t know who else might be part of a Kevin Love trade or what they’ll do with, say, Waiters, but right now the Cavs have nine players under contract. I think Miami had one.
Interesting to note that so far we’ve heard nothing about how long LeBron wants to sign for or how this is going to work. I presume he’s willing to leave some money on the table and sign as a free agent, although the amount of years would still matter. The Cavs’ first offer for Love is apparently Waiters, Bennett, and a first-round pick. Oh please. Send Wiggins and get it over with.
He’s an obstacle in that he’s always been known as one of the most tightfisted owners in the league, and that may be why Boozer is still on the team. The team is still interested in Pau Gasol and some others, and they’re bringing Nikola Mirotic over from Europe. If they can’t sign Carmelo I assume they’ll just amnesty Boozer at last. The fact that Rose’s health is such a huge question mark can’t help them. If he’s healthy, they’re a contender. If not, they’re really good because they’ll always play great defense, but they’d need a lot of good fortune to win the conference. Speaking of which Indiana’s plans are still a mystery. Are they going to go further to get Lance Stephenson or will they let him go somewhere like LA?
Eh. The Cavs already have LeBron, so it isn’t like they need Love to convince him to sign. I think it’s smart to tell the Wolves to go ahead and find a better deal elsewhere and then come back for Wiggins.
I think it’s likely that the possibility of getting Love was an important part of their discussions. LeBron and Kyrie Irving and Wiggins and company is a good team, but you can’t tell me it compares favorably with San Antonio and Oklahoma City and Houston.
Well, yes. It’s a negotiation. But I think we all know where this is going to end up. Boston is interested in Love and there’s no way Minny is going to accept a future (low) first round pick when the Cavs just drafted number one.
The big loser here is Dwyane Wade, who opted out of a contract that would have paid him $20.16 million next year and $21.65 million in '15-'16. He’s not going to make that kind of money again. Bosh, meanwhile, has a max offer from Houston, which I imagine he’ll take now.
If Love is smart, he’ll wait a year until his contract expires and just sign with the Cavs as a free agent. Lebron, Love, Kyrie, and Wiggins is going to be in the hunt for the title for the next 4 and depending on how Wiggins develops, this may be another 4 straight Finals for Lebron with that group.
While you’re right that San Antonio, OKC, or Houston may be better (though I dunno about Houston), being in the West, Love may still not make it out of the first round. I think after no playoffs for so many years, he’s looking for more of a guaranteed deep run rather than a crapshoot. And Sefolosha just signed with the Hawks, so OKC’s a little weaker now on defense.
