It reminds me of pictures I’ve seen of rare one-eyed kittens, and is subtly disturbing in the same way.
Explanations for the Cyclops in Greek (and other) mythology explains them in terms of the single openings in volcanos, the nasal opening in skulls of mammoths and mastodons, and in firestick boards, but surely part of the inspiration for them must be these occasional one-eyed mutants.
