Legally and practically, could an Evangelical Protestant ascend the Temple Mount in Jerusalem?

What would be the ramifications if an Evangelical Protestant (Quite possibly American, but doesn’t have to be) attempted to ascend the Temple Mount in Jerusalem? Assume he is unarmed, isn’t attempting to convert anyone, and is on an individual or group (e.g. with other Christians) pilgrimage.

  1. Would he be breaking any local laws?
  2. Would the Israeli authorities attempt to stop him (e.g. by telling him that he could cause a violent incident because some Muslims may see his presence as sacrilige?)
  3. Would Muslim authorities or individual Muslims attempt to stop him (either through legal or extralegal methods)?

Sure. Tourists visit it all the time. It is WAY less of a big deal than you seem to think it is.
