If one used fanfiction reading habits to judge sexual orientation, there would be a lot of straight women out there who were gay men.
What’s a better sign of latent lesbianism or bisexuality (although by no means a sure thing) is the fact that your friend is wondering whether or not she is a lesbian.
Lamia, I would have said that it’s reasonably common to question one’s sexual orientation, even if one doesn’t end up deciding that it’s different than one previously thought; especially in this culture, when anything not gender-normative is grounds for suspicion.
me jane, your friend may or may not be lesbian or bisexual. A lot of people just like fanfic, frankly.
As an analogical example, I have a good friend who loves reading gay boy porn and watching gay boys going at it; she identifies as a queer woman and is not interested in men for relationships, though she has tried sex (not intercourse) with a man on occasion. Actually, it’s not uncommon for lesbians to be fans of gayboy slash fic.
So no, she’s not a lesbian “for” reading that stuff. She may be a lesbian or bisexual, and I can see how enjoying f/f fic would make her question that, but time will tell which gender(s) she enjoys having sex and/or relationships with in person.
Not that this is really on topic, but I thought I should point out a raving male yaoi fanboy, as opposed to the raving female yuri fan that this thread is about.
I am a straight chap.
I like lesbian erotica. (A lot! )
I haven’t analysed the reasons, but perhaps it’s because there’s no rival chap in the picture. Or maybe my subconscious thinks that one woman good; two woman better.
Perhaps, but the OP said this friend has “suspected she is a lesbian for quite some time”, apparently before the fanfic thing came up. If a woman has felt that she may be a lesbian for a long time and enjoys reading lesbian erotica, then I think that at least suggests that she may really be a lesbian or bisexual…although, as I said, it’s not a sure thing.
