I watched a documentary last night about Western reactions to Japanese manga and anime. One of the interesting points brought up was the popularity of male/male adult manga and anime - produced almost exclusively for heterosexual women.
Female friends of mine have all expressed absolutely no interest in male/male porn; none of my friends, male or female, seemed to know why lesbian porn is popular with hetero men, but the opposite doesn’t appear to be true. I just chalked it down to the differences between men and women without much thought.
Now, after seeing this documentary, I’m curious. If Japanese women are a strong market for male gay porn, why aren’t “Western” women? Or is it just my female friends who don’t find it interesting? Do women find male/male porn (anime, manga or any other sort) arousing?
There IS a large market for it, it’s just (in my experience) all written, and not professionally produced. For example, almost ALL slash fanfiction is written and read by women. Most of those are heterosexual.
Most of my friends that I’ve met through conventions and such are also VERY aroused by male/male porn. (As am I, for that matter.) Just my experience. YMMV.
I’ve always wondered about this dichotomy between the sexes. I did finally meet one young hetero American lady who admitted to me that she enjoyed watching gay porn.
I brought this very same subject up on an open line radio talk show! They were discussing what turns guys on and the answers, screening out the garbage, ranged from the obvious, like nude, sexy women, to watching lesbians go at it. Then the discussion turned to female bisexuality and homosexuality, the latter drawing a great amount of negative comments from guys, and a few girls.
So, I called in and posed the question: Do normal women get as turned on by watching two guys go at it as guys do watching two women.
The response, by many, many female callers, was a resounding no.
Japan is kind of unusual, no? There they cross the lines here that we would consider kiddy porn, with the guys going nuts over used teen panties, bottled teen girl spit, getting all steamed up over young looking women and so on. They probably have a not well publicized teen porn industry there also. So, the Japanese women finding that the watching of two guys copulate doesn’t suprise me a whole lot.
I don’t know…I’m a hetero fem and I kinda get turned on by that. Not guys actually DOING it, but two guys who are something of a couple. (Young good looking guys at least.) That turns me on more than a hetero couple for some reason. i always figured it was for the same reason that guys liked lesbians…
I think YMMV sums it up nicely. In the world of male/male furry art, a very substantial portion of it is done by women, and I’ve talked to more than a few that have mentioned how they’d like to be in a threesome with two guys, where the males affection wasn’t just limited to her. It’s not at all an extraordinary thing in my experience.
If you mean the average grunt-moan porn industry, though, I’d say it’s definitely targetted at men in general. So it may not be the content of the porn that fails to attract, but the way it’s presented. Erotica that focus on the sensual as much as the sexual seems to have a much broader appeal. I mean, heck, I don’t even like what you’d find on the shelves under “gay porn”, and I’m supposedly its primary audience
Just in case this gets moved to IMHO, I’ll voice mine that yes, I do find gay porn incredibly arousing. I will often specifically pull up gay sex sites on the internet.
As Falcon has already mentioned, there is a strong following for male gay fiction in the fannish community. For instance, people will write private “fanzines” which contain fan-written stories where they couple up Kirk and Spock, or Mulder and Skinner, Starsky and Hutch. (Yes, this goes waaaay back!)
I’ve never been a fan of slash fiction, (I used to do a lot of illustrations for these fanzines) but a lot of female fans do enjoy it. (Whatever floats your boat! ) I don’t know the percentages, but my guess is that among hetero female fanfiction fans (try saying that 5 times fast!) maybe 50% like slash? This is a WAG, of course. What is your WAG on the percentage of female fans that like slash, Falcon?
kind of is, but I think they just like it 'cause you get two for one. They get to watch penetrative intercourse, but instead of having that huge, ugly monster in the picture they get more female genitalia…
matt, I suspect one of three things, or a combination thereof:
Your friends really aren’t turned on by m/m sex and you’ve simply led a sheltered enough life not to have encountered anyone who is. (not the most likely option, I’m sure.)
Your friends (some of them, anyway) are lying to you, possibly because they’re embarrassed to admit it.
Your friends have never actually been exposed to it and they just think it wouldn’t arouse them.
I’ve met several women who, in their 30s, had never seen a gay magazine or video. Initially they appeared either shocked or repulsed that I would find it arousing. Then I showed it to them. WOO BABY! They’re now converts.
Hrm. This is gonna be hard to guess, since I got into slash first, and general fanfic second. But off the top of my head, I’d say 50-60%. For some shows, the slash fans will outnumber the gen fans. I do think the slash fen tend to be a little more…outspoken?
