Let's cheer up! A Rosenmontag MMP

Up, caffeinated, and off to work

My old church used to do the pancake breakfast on Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Mmmmm, pancakes. I may have to pick up some buttermilk today so I can make pancake dinner tomorrow. I don’t have enough time in the morning for a breakfast more involved than oatmeal and a cup of yogurt.

Note: if you put bananas in your oatmeal, do not forget to add a touch of sugar or you will be eating bland blandness and wondering why.

I like the kimono pics STG. The process of dressing in kimono has always confused me. It doesn’t help that the first time I found out what a complicated process it is was when I first read Memoirs of a Geisha which could use a photographic index in a few places. Geisha: A Life was a bit better in terms of pictures, but not much.

I think Stephan Pastis (the guy who draws/writes Pearls Before Swine) is a secret Mumper. Last week he was talking about hockey, today the comic is about cussing in Yiddish.

Good idea gt, and I will do my best to keep on the sunny side this week.

Shrove Tuesday and Pancake suppers, so many memories. I always look forward to this time of year.

orangeveg you are so bad for that link! I have been looking at treats for the last 10 minutes, mouth watering, and I need to go grocery shopping! No snacks in the house at all, wah! I also offer to relieve you of any cheese you don’t care for, and I’ll share happily with boofae!

It’s morning for all of you, well, and for me too, but I have had another bout of insomnia, and it’s 4:20 (hehe :p), please, someone tell me to shut this thing down and lie back down and at least pretend to sleep!

Just heard from Mr Rebo. His brother died this morning. He’s in a better place now, and out of pain.

Poor guy just would never quit drinking! :frowning:

Nice OP, gt! I will try to be upbeat and happy this week (always look on the bright side of life, and all that!).

ETA: {{{Rebo and Mr Rebo}}} No matter the circumstances, it must be hard losing your brother.

I am “somewhere in Southern Germany” right now. I’ve not seen too much Fasnet* stuff here, although I’ll keep an eye peeled this evening. Unfortunately I’m a bit under the weather, so not really up to travelling somewhere like Obernau to seek out the freaky masks.

Holy mackerel. All this talk of Mardi Gras makes me realize that I’m missing out on packzi at the Reisbeck Pick-n-Save! I’m almost out of time! Noooo! If I don’t get my packzi, I’ll cry.

Rebo, I’m so sorry to hear about your husband’s brother.

The only grr I’m suffering from is a cat-related grr. Why has my cat Cosmo turned psychotic? Why? Why?

I may be in Grrrr corner today, but I won’t be here–my laptop gets <SOB!> taken away from me at 11 am.
I’m having trouble with it and it’s going to the diagnostic clinic. Apple folk should wear white coats, dontcha think?
Sorry about your BIL,** Rebo. **
Enjoy your Monday, all. And I like pancakes, too…

I’ve been reading for weeks trying to remember who is who and what’s going on in their lives. It’s like starting a story in the middle and having to guess what led up to the current page. It’s fun but also a little nervewracking because until I get it straight I don’t want to say anything insensitive about someone’s problem that I didn’t know they had. I figure if I just keep reading it I’ll catch up eventually.

One thing to be warned about - these people talk about wonderful food and recipes that make me hungry and send me running back to the weight loss thread. I’m so jealous and making lists of things to make once I lose these last few pounds.

Karyn, don’t worry too much about writing the recipes down - we keep them all here!

I can make it a little easier for you, Karyn - I only really have one problem. I refer to it as 'im indoors. Simple, see?

Thanks Dotty. They all look yummy. I think I’ll try the scallops and hoisin sauce because it’s not at all fattening if I go easy on the pasta, and I love scallops. I think I’d be willing to fast for a day for one piece of that trifle, too.

OK thanks : ) I haven’t brought it up here before but I have bipolar disorder and it’s generally very well managed with meds, but I have those days where “I’m not feeling very sociable” is my euphemism for ‘stay away if you don’t want your face bitten off’. It’s a big relief to be retired and not have to clamp down and hide all symptoms anymore on bad days. If I hadn’t done that it would have destroyed my career. If there’s one thing I’ve learned is that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel even when it feels like there can’t be. I hope that it’s not too rough for you right now.

My church is having a pancake dinner and jazz concert tomorrow night. Should be fun. And they give out beads, but I don’t think you’re supposed to flash anyone for them.

I did try the chocolate cake that I talked about last week… and it was a complete failure. Well, not complete. But it’s grainy and didn’t rise at all. So it’s kind of like very dense, grainy brownies with frosting. Not what I want from my chocolate cake. I do kind of like the flavor, but I just don’t consider it “cake.” I will bring it in to my coworkers, though, since a) they’ll eat anything, b) it is chocolaty, and c) I’d hate to just throw it out. It isn’t THAT bad.

I made some cookies that were very good, but also not quite as advertised. They were called “short stack cookies” and were supposed to taste like pancakes due to the maple syrup in them, but they don’t taste maple-y at all. But they’re good sugar cookies anyway.

I did have success with Alton’s Swedish meatball recipe. They were very YUM.

{{{Rebos}}}

I have no motivation to seek out work today. I think I’ll play with the formatting of my final chapter a little more. Oh, and I need to go email my second chapter to my director whether he likes it or not.

It is done. Now it’s time for Chapter 3.4: This better be the last rewrite, consarn it.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it yet, but Corvette Roommate does a dead-on impression of Hank Hill. We’re talking about featuring it on the answering machine.

I’m all for pancakes. Hmm. Must stop at the store on my way home.

And I’ve yanked some beads out of storage. Gen-yu-wine Mardi Gras beads, collected by yours truly in Louisiana. And no, I didn’t flash for them. You actually don’t have to, at least not at the parades outside the craziness in the Quarter. It’s just not February without beads anymore for me. Lemme tell you, New Orleans gets into you whether you realize it or not. And now that I’m thinking about it I must see if the grocery store has any king cakes when I go to lunch. Sounds odd, maybe, but I know there’s some expat Louisiana people up here (and if you’re from NO itself expat is an appropriate term!) and anyway I wouldn’t be surprised because it’s a very upscale store. It’s expensive but kicks ass.

{{{{{Mumpers}}}}} I have a case of the donwannas. Anybody want to go to work in my place?

{{{{rebo and Mr. rebo}}}} I hope he went peacefully.

Okay gt, outta the House of Grrrr it is. I can’t promise any confetti flinging but there will be no more moping. Anyway, I am trying to conserve brain power to figure out a legal way to make enough money to quit office work for good. Hmmmm, I did see a sign on their truck that Critter Control is hiring.

I think I would like to restore artwork. I wonder how one gets into that line of work.

karyn, not to worry. You will fit in with our lot just fine.

I think I will [del]tromp[/del] skip down to the shipping department and get my mail.

Tupug

Two things:

  1. What’s king cake and packzi?

  2. I have found the greatest animation in the world. I can’t wait to use it in a Pit argument. BEHOLD!

Hai everybody.

Busy busy busy weekend. Miami Friend and I went to check out the new addition the Art Gallery of Ontario on Saturday morning, and then grabbed some delicious chinese buns from a bakery up the street.

On Sunday morning, we all blurfed at each other around the breakfast table, and then we bundled him up into a cab, just in time to miss yet another snowstorm. It’s positively wintery again, much to my dismay. We managed to run all our weekend errands in the afternoon through the blowing snow, thankfully.

Last night, The Boy and I watched Milk instead of watching the Oscars ceremony. OMG, what a heartbreaking film… I was a watering pot for the last 10 minutes.

I really really want some paczi now. Too bad the Polish district is so far away. pout I’ll probably just make pancakes for dinner tomorrow instead. Mmmmmm… pancakes.

ETA: Spaz, these are paczi. They’re essentially a jelly donut, but soooo much better.

Don’t worry Karyn, it’s not too hard to keep up around here, just as long as you realise there’s absolutely no logical order to these posts!

‘im indoors is a 6ft Scotsman with a serious addiction to World of Soddin’ Warcraft, to the point where I might not see him all weekend because he can’t tear himself away from whatever he’s playing. Still, if that’s what he chooses to do, he’ll be missing out on the chicken in red wine sauce I’m making for dinner, and the lemon cous cous cake for dessert. Silly boy.

No pancakes for me tomorrow, although those paczi look yummy. It’s Fat Club so I have to go and get weighed (and assess the weekend’s damage). Afterwards we’re having a taster evening so I’m making some chicken and herb balls with a spicy tomato dipping sauce. My friend has made butternut and sweet potato soup which she’s very proud of because She Doesn’t Cook.

(((((Rebo and Mr Rebo))))) - I hope his passing was peaceful.
