Let's open a Comfort Food Cafe - what do you want on the menu?

I can relate to that. At different times in my life I’ve had completely different approaches to cooking, depending on my energy level, busy-ness, family feeding obligations, and so on. There are dishes I used to make constantly that now I think, “really? I went through all that trouble?”

I think I might want to make the brown bread now, though…I might try to find my recipe anyway (or follow the one in the youtube video).

The name of the cozy comfort food joint shall be Fud. Or Fuds.

Have to get the lawyers on that. The trademark is already taken.
It’s a Mexican company, but they do a lot of business in the southwestern U.S.

You gotta put B &M baked beans into it. They invented baked beans in America. Always worth the trouble to find.

Another vote for grilled cheese sandwiches (yes, white bread and either Velveeta or Kraft Singles) and tomato soup.

Lipton Cup-a-Soup – either the Chicken Noodle or Cream of Chicken.

Biscuits and gravy.

Chicken-fried steak with country gravy.

Hot turkey sandwiches (open-faced, with gravy and mashed potatoes).

Stove Top stuffing.

Little Debbie “Zebra” snack cakes, and Hostess Zingers.

If we’re going to have a Comfort Food Cafe, we’re going to need recipes.

you know they make velveeta singles now?

My contribution is sloppy joes … just pick from the 37 ways to make it …

Yes, however, now I use sourdough and better cheese, with Progresso tomato & Basil.

Fig Newtons for me.

Yes, but for me add lots of grated cheese and skip the onions- sadly raw onions give me indigestion.

Kraft Mac & Hormel chili no beans. Grated cheese on top.

Amazon and Vermont Country Store. Amazon is 13.84 for two or $50 for a dozen. Great survival food.

Pork & beans with cut up hot dogs.

“Eat, Sit & Gulp.”
ala Martian Boogie.

There used to be a chain of restaurants in the Bay Area, The Big Yellow Farmhouse. The front facades at least looked like one. Alas a quick Google search came up empty.

There is a chain of brew pubs here in Arizona, Uncle Bear’s, named after the founder’s dog that allows dogs outside. I don’t think they have a staff dog, though.

Be careful.

Hear, hear. I also want Fig Newtons, preferably washed down with some Swiss Miss hot chocolate or a similar beverage. I’ll take some of those Nabisco peanut butter wafers too, thank you. And though I don’t eat them myself, there are probably going to be cafe customers who would like some double-stuffed Oreos, Fudge Stripes, and Nilla Wafers.

Thanks! The Vermont Country Store catalog was in my trash can. I got it out and did not find B&M Brown Bread; tried their site on line and still did not find it. As a desperation try I searched for Brown Bread and sure enough Vermont Country Store has it. They do not list it as B&M but rather Brown Bread in a Can. But the text does say B&M. Odd, but ok then. 2 cans for $11.90. I’m ordering! Thanks again.

I think they changed the recipe, the beans don’t taste like I remember from childhood. The only ones that taste “right” are Bush’s vegetarian.

Tuna Melts with crinkle cut fries. And Deluxe Tuna Melts (Tuna Melt with tomatoes and lettuce). And let’s not forget the Tuna Melt Royale (a Deluxe Tuna Melt with 2 strips of bacon).

You and Hobbes have a lot in common.

I don’t know about the name, but I find “Late Supper / Early Breakfast” to be weirdly evocative.

I would like to have roast chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy made from the drippings, and cornbread dressing with lots of sage.

Y’all can keep your gross nanner puddin’. I’m just going to sit here with a box of ginger snaps.

Grilled cheese with the customer’s choice of cheeses.
Tuna melt with extra sharp cheddar
Pumpkin pie
Ramen noodle omelet with added veggies (it’s a weird one, but warm, cheap, filling, kinda nutritious, and tasty)
Ham bean soup (the tomato kind and so thick it’s almost a stew) over toast and topped with a poached egg.

Ham and cheese sandwich on toasted bread with potato chips and a mountain dew.

2nd choice is a baked sweet potato and corn beef hash with ice tea. The hash is Armour

3rd is chili on a baked potato with ice tea. This my quick and easy dinner. Microwave the potato and open a can of Wolf Brand chili.

The two favorite sandwiches of my youth:

  • cream cheese on white bread with salted peanut pressed in till it couldn’t hold any more, and a second slice of bread with cream cheese smooshed on top.
  • fresh-from-the-garden tomato sliced on lightly toasted and mayonnaised white bread, with a little salt.

These days, I generally eat multi-grain bread, but those two sandwiches absolutely must have white.
