Let's open a Comfort Food Cafe - what do you want on the menu?

No fusion, nothing trendy, none of this 3 beans and a sprig of parsley stuff. Our cafe will have only the best listing of the food we want when we want to chill, not worry about calories or fat or fiber, and just enjoy eating.

Mac-n-cheese - that’s the first thing that comes to mind when I think comfort food. Optional spoonful of peas mixed in when you think a veggie is necessary. Both box mix and homemade versions will be available.

Second is Campbell’s chicken noodle soup with lots of Keebler Club crackers crushed in to make a thick, pasty bowl of comfort. Added bonus - it’s chicken soup, so it’s good for what ails ya!

And chocolate milk, of course.

What else?

Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup.

And to clarify, it must be Wonder Bread with American Cheese. And Campbell’s Tomato Soup.

In no particular order;

Lasagna - noodles, marinara sauce, ground beef and/or Italian sausage, ricotta, and mozzarella, layered and oven-broiled before serving.

Chili sizes and/or chili cheese dogs, with mustard and onion.

Open-faced meatloaf sandwiches topped with mashed potatoes and beef gravy.

Pepperoni pizza.

Fish and chips with clam chowder, coleslaw, hush puppies, tartar sauce, and malt vinegar.

Carne asada fries.

Chicken fried steak, real mashed potatoes, and green beans with bacon bits. Real white gravy over the potatoes and CFS.

ETA: The salt and pepper shakers at the table have to be those kind with the holes big enough that stuff actually comes out.

Chicken and biscuits and biscuits with sausage gravy.

Shepherds pie. American chop suey.

Sloppy joes with potato salad and baked beans.

Poached eggs with waffles and scrapple.

Patty melt and crinkle fries.

Shepard’s pie

I have to say, I find it interesting that no one has posted anything from the dessert column - no cakes or pies or cookies or Twinkies… do those not comfort us?

Roast chicken with rice and broccoli

Lamb chops with mint sauce, egg noodles, and peas.

Hmmm. Not as much as an actual meal, truth be told. But also, I’m a pastry snob. I like fancy expensive pastries. And i love home made cookies, cakes, and pies. But i probably don’t want to eat the desserts at this comfort Cafe.

Keep your fancy pastries. .

This CFC serves up Bread pudding with bourbon syrup and homemade ice cream.

Hmm, okay, I’ll have some of that home made I’ve cream, thanks.

Liver and onions

Boston Cream Pie

A Reuben with a side of fries and chicken gravy.

Chili con carne, cornbread and lemonade.

open faced white meat turkey sandwich, lots of gravy, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. String beans or broccoli optional.

I like most of the items on offer at the cafe so far. I would add baked French onion soup. Also chicken wings with fries, dip, and malt vinegar.

Open faced omelets with variable toppings: cheese, ham, sausage, peperoni, tomato etc.

Cheese and onions quiche.

Baked cheese cake.

My bacon wrapped individual meatloaves. Baked potato (in the oven, thank you) with crispy skin, loads of butter, and sour cream. Canned green beans with butter and pepper. Sea Pak fried clam strips. Sausage pizza. Potato chips. Chocolate chip cookies, Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse. Bacon and over easy eggs fried in the bacon grease, with a side of really dark toast and lots of butter. I’m seeing a trend. My comfort food is butter. And to be honest, dessert is Diet Dr Pepper and a few cigarettes. I’ve been almost 2 years smober though.
