Let's open a Comfort Food Cafe - what do you want on the menu?

Franco-American (now Campbell’s) SpaghettiOs with sliced franks. Has to be the franks.

Cap’n Crunch original or Cap’n Crunch Peanut Butter with whole milk

Jif peanut butter smooth and Smucker’s grape jelly on white Wonder Bread with the crusts cut off

Grilled cheese sandwich - Sliced American cheese on white bread with butter and Heinz ketchup

Manhattan style clam chowder

Ritz (or some other non-sweet Nabisco) crackers with Easy Cheez

Those little packets of rectangular crackers that come with spreadable cheese and a red rectangular cheese spreader

Soft boiled eggs (really, just warmed through, whites still runny) and buttered toast

Indian-style French toast - soft white bread dipped in beaten eggs flavored with salt, minced onions, cilantro leaves, and green chilies and pan fried - with Maggi Hot and Sweet ketchup on the side

Baked chicken with buttered corn and Rice-a-Roni

Hamburger Helper

Yeah, baby!

Chicken Pot Pie. I buy Marie Callender.

They’re easy to make in batches for a Cafe. First roll out the dough and line aluminum pans.

You need to prepare bowls of the precooked chicken and the vegetables. Add amounts to the aluminum pans. Make the sauce and spoon into the pans.

Add the dough for the top. They can be baked throughout the day for customers.

This is the one I came in to say. I think it’s been mentioned another time or two.

And bread. Fresh baked bread slathered with butter.

And my grandmother’s vareniki. Dumplings stuffed with farmer’s cheese, briefly boiled and then dumped into a mixture of butter and onions with sour cream. They’re a heart attack on the plate but who cares when you only have them once every decade or so!

Nowadays, comfort food consists of the daily tall cup of my own freshly made café au lait. And that’s pretty comforting.

Gumbo.

Denny’s used to have a BLT on the menu. Now, they don’t, at least, not locally. But just ask, and the local Denny’s will make you a BLT. That’s comfort food.

It’s even more comforting if the soup-of the-day is mushroom soup. BLT and mushroom soup? Delicious!

I’ll see your Indian-style French toast with sweet French toast spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg. Swimming in butter and real maple syrup, of course.

Haricots cannellini à la sauce tomate sur toast

I had a fried egg and bacon sandwich on raisin toast at the Waffle House one time in the middle of the night. It really hit the spot.

You can have it, my friend. I don’t touch sweet French toast. I’ll stick with my savory.

French dip sandwich

Coke with cane sugar

Strawberry milk

Snickerdoodles

Angel food cake with caramel icing

I may have a sweet tooth.

Rhubarb crunch.

Thread about rhubarb pie etc.

NSFW Crazy Rhubarb Lady

Yeah, a real chilled Coke in a glass bottle or over ice in a glass glass.

Pringles

Cheese puffs, cheese balls

Campbell’s tomato soup with a grilled cheese sandwich

… I think it’s clear from my choices that I grew up in the ‘70s, when American kids were basically fed trash.

These.
And not sugar cookies with cinnamon sugar icing, please. Those are imposters and we Snickerdoodle fans will not partake.

Also Rice Krispy bars to the menu. Big ones.

Yes, please.

Iowa chops. Pure pork goodness.

When fried, goes well with boiled potatoes heated in the pork chop pan with a little added butter.

Did someone mention gumbo? A bowl of andouille sausage and seafood gumbo would hit the spot.

A nice MLT - mutton , lettuce and tomato sandwich , where the mutton is lean and the tomato is ripe, they’re so perky>

For the Hoosiers at home and the Hoosier diaspora-

Home made chicken and noodles served over mashed potatoes. Yeast rolls on the side. Sugar cream pie for dessert.

I had two immediate simultaneous reactions:

  • Jeebus, need some white carbs to go with those white carbs?

… and …

  • That sounds DELICIOUS

Ever heard of Cheese Frenchies? It’s a deep fried cheese sandwich and delish:
