Jif peanut butter smooth and Smucker’s grape jelly on white Wonder Bread with the crusts cut off
Grilled cheese sandwich - Sliced American cheese on white bread with butter and Heinz ketchup
Manhattan style clam chowder
Vegetable soup with alphabet noodles
Ritz (or some other non-sweet Nabisco) crackers with Easy Cheez
Those little packets of rectangular crackers that come with spreadable cheese and a red rectangular cheese spreader
Skyline or Gold Star chili four ways (on spaghetti with onions and a heaping of shredded cheese) with oyster crackers and hot sauce – peanut butter on white bread on the side and a glass of cold milk
Soft boiled eggs (really, just warmed through, whites still runny) and buttered toast
Indian-style French toast - soft white bread dipped in beaten eggs flavored with salt, minced onions, cilantro leaves, and green chilies and pan fried - with Maggi Hot and Sweet ketchup on the side
Black Indian (Assam or Darjeeling) tea with milk and sugar with buttered toast and jam or jelly or digestive biscuits or Britannia biscuits
This is the one I came in to say. I think it’s been mentioned another time or two.
And bread. Fresh baked bread slathered with butter.
And my grandmother’s vareniki. Dumplings stuffed with farmer’s cheese, briefly boiled and then dumped into a mixture of butter and onions with sour cream. They’re a heart attack on the plate but who cares when you only have them once every decade or so!
Nowadays, comfort food consists of the daily tall cup of my own freshly made café au lait. And that’s pretty comforting.
Denny’s used to have a BLT on the menu. Now, they don’t, at least, not locally. But just ask, and the local Denny’s will make you a BLT. That’s comfort food.
It’s even more comforting if the soup-of the-day is mushroom soup. BLT and mushroom soup? Delicious!
