Let's play a role-playing game

Works for me. To be honest, I don’t know what half of that stuff is. But, as glee said, he can carry around a fat chick and still fight like Rashad Evans*. I still have the file on my work computer, so I can run the weights tomorrow if you’d like (got a bit hung up today). So are you saying we should all use that model, and the lower ENDs get the leather and the higher get the ring?

*Paraphrased.

I think it would be a good start.

As for definitions of what stuff is (You probably know most of this, but for the sake of completeness):

Plate: Metal armor
Scale: Leather armor on which small metal plates are attached. They overlap, sort of like shingles.
Ring: Leather armor in which metal studs or rings are sewn.
Kurbul: Leather armor which has been boiled in wax or oil, making it very hard.

Halfhelm: A conical helmet covering only the skull but not the face or neck. Includes a nose guard.
Vambraces: Arm guards which cover the forearms. Typically about 8-10 inches long.
Hauberk: A long coat that hangs down almost to the knees.
Gauntlets: Gloves
Leggings: Pants
Tunic: A shirt that covers the upper arms and hips.
Cowl: A hat that covers the skull and neck.
Kneeboots: Boots that go all the way up to (and over) the knees.

I found a great resource for this here. Some of the names are very different that the ones I used, but this should be a help. What they call a Norman Helmet is exactly what I was thinking of.

I haven’t slept the last two nights, so am too tired to plan something out. I’m willing to go with whatever Santo comes up with.

DM, I would like:

  • something the party can afford (i.e. they get their own desired protection + weapons too)
  • armour suited to our cover story (of working for the Baron, which means obeying social status rules)
  • a broadsword + shield (and perhaps a smaller sword for confined spaces)

N.B. I don’t mind heavy protection, because I can carry it, but don’t want to be too slow if we have to chase or retreat.

It would seem that this armor thing has bogged down the game to a complete halt. We are mired in math and rules that are, frankly, not all that much fun except to rules geeks like me. I apologize for throwing a wet blanket on my own game.

What I’ll do is make suggestions for each of you based on your own wishes and my experience with the system. If there is something you don’t like, feel free to change it to your liking. But I will attempt to give you the maximum protection for an optimal weight. I hope that this will meet with everyone’s satisfaction.

Works for me. my only question, isn’t the estoc a two handed sword? I think I’d prefer a one-handed so I can use it along with the shield.

Thanks for your help on this.

There is no need to apologise for being a rules geek - I’m one too!
(It’s just that I’m a fanatic on a different game, so was struggling a bit.)

I’m happy with my allocation, provided I’m not too slow - does the -30 penalty affect my speed?

The estoc is a one-handed weapon.

Being that I don’t know much about it, I decided to Google it. It looks like there were some two-handed versions, but that’s not what you have available to you.

Oh boy…I completely lost track of this one (Gee, man, the 30 alerts in your e-mail inbox didn’t work, did they?). So I’m here, I’m ready to go just as soon as all of you get dressed.

Thank you. I stick to my apology, I should have known better.

The penalty won’t affect your speed. (And even if it did, you don’t need to outrun the hungry bear. You just need to outrun Antinor. ;))

And now that we’ve cleared this up… How about those Kaldoran politics, eh?

Good you’re still on board. You’ve got nifty new trousers, and your fur has been cleaned. You’re finding this whole sleeping indoors thing to be a novel approach to life.

I dig it!

We’re ready… waitin’ on you! :stuck_out_tongue:

Some people love to spend time tweaking their characters. It’s one of the few ways a player can directly impact their characters growth, performance, or even “appearance”.

A lot of other things are in the hands of the Game Master (Quest availability, NPC action/reactions, phat loot), or the (damn) dice.

:stuck_out_tongue:

I will take your recommended travel kit. Let’s hit the road. I want excitement and adventure and really wild things!

Alrighty, then.

Last I heard, you were planning on going to Caleme. I’m not saying that that’s a bad idea, and I’m not saying that it’s a good idea, but I’m curious – what will you do when you get there?

Well, I seem to have had a vision some time in the past that told me that I needed to get home asap. I don’t know what I am going to do once I get there though. We should probably ask around town sort of subtle like about what is going on in the kingdom.

In our disguises of course.

Chimin gave you a fairly good account of what’s happening in the kingdom. If this is indeed a high-level conspiracy, most average people aren’t going to have much of an idea of what happened to you. Indeed, the well-connected Sir Chimin either doesn’t know or is not talking about it. One might question whether any documentation exists about it or if it has been destroyed. One might wonder if anyone other than that one guard saw you just before your disappeared. One might wonder who your fifth companion was. And certainly one might wonder who wanted you out of the way and why.

I’m not saying that I have all the answers to these questions, but I’m wondering what these lines of inquiry might lead to, and where you could go to find out.

I am happy to escort our distinguished Cleric anywhere he wants to go, but we need to study the situation in the Kingdom (as outlined earlier to us) before we set off.
Given we have been kidnapped once and dumped in the Wilderness, we will cause dramatic events once our return is known.

A cursory glance at the history suggest that a candidate for a vital post (me!) was nobbled before the vote, together with several supporters.
We should decide if that’s correct and who we are going to see about it.

I should add that Santo was a candidate as well. And of course, Mother Church may have had an opinion that carried a lot of weight.
