Out of the Darkness (A Harnic RPG) OOG and Control Thread

So we can speculate out of game about what the heck is going on in game.

I think Ant (do you mind if I call you Ant?) is right about our basic characters.

Very interesting guesses!

FWIW in my game there are no alignments. There is, however, a stat called Morality. Usually I leave that blank as it’s up to the players to play how they want. But my take is that all of these characters probably have a MOR of 9-16. Ant’s is probably highest, but I doubt that it’s an 18.

I prefer Antinor, but Ant is ok. So no alignments per TDN, not that it would super relevent. I know a couple of you want to just start moving on, but I’d rather get a basic handle on who we are and a feel for abilities so we don’t get ourselves killed too easily.

Since I had an instinct for starting the fire, I’ll probably proceed along an exploratory path. Should be justifiable IG as that would be a rangers tendancy. If I’m wrong I’m sure TDN will smack me down in some way.

Perhaps NAF could explore some possible magic…in a ‘doesn’t really remember this’ sort of way. What’s the worst that could…forget I asked that!

Antinor it is. No thing, 4 extra key strokes won’t kill me. Good idea about exploring magic.

Let me head over there.

I like playing Paladins (with high Morality) - but if that’s the case, how did tdn know? (cue creepy music  )

Shoot, I’m not a cleric, I’m a bard. Am I right?

You’re a middle-aged man. It could be that you’re a bard, but if you’ve forgotten every song you ever learned, how would you know? For that matter, you could be a 20th-level mage who just forgot all of his spells.

Bear in mind that we can only make (educated) guesses.

So far we have clues that Antinor is a woodsman and religious; that I am also religious and that NAF knows healing.
I think picking a class at present is a longshot.

If we can get outside, there should be lots more to jog our memories…

As far as guessing your character classes, try not to shoehorn yourselves into DnD rules – we’re not using them, and my rules differ somewhat. While professions exist, such as mercenary, scribe, ratter, and sailor, classes as such do not exist. Someone well-trained in combat may only be able to find employment as a farmer, for instance. Someone who is entitled to carry a sword may be lousy at it, but may hold a position of military power.

There are, in fact, character classes, but rather than fighter, thief, cleric, and magic user, they are Noble, Guilded free, Unguilded free, Serf, and Slave. And while there are no RULES restrictions on who may do what, such as wielding certain weapons or casting spells, there SOCIETAL LAWS regarding these things. For example, serfs are very limited in what weapons they may carry, and only nobles may use broadswords.

And it goes without saying that some people live outside of society and society’s laws.

As for what social class you all belong to, you don’t remember. But none of you speak with peasant accents and with the exception of Antinor, your hands don’t look like they’ve seen a whole lot of hard physical labor.

You guys are starting to generate some stats. Here are the numbers so far, based on what you can gather:

I’m smart, hot and do physical labor? Well, 2 out of 3 isn’t bad. Hmm, maybe I’m the Westly! That wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Yeah, but you can’t run fast either.

Maybe you strut.

tdn, what’s the difference between dexterity and agility?
Why has only NAF got a Voice rating?

In our world, you would be in a Diet Coke advert, or perhaps in the excellent laundry ad!

Dexterity is nimbleness of hands. Agility is nimblenes of feet.

NAF got a VOI rating right off the bat because you noticed right away that he has a beautiful sonorous voice. Not unlike James Earl Jones or Kelsey Grammer. Does that mean that the rest of you sound like Gilbert Godfried or Woody Allen? Let’s roll them up (and put them in proper order):

Sunsign - Tarael, the Pentacle

Fletching 39

Boys, I think we’re gonna be facing a dragon. We’d better prepare.

On bow-making

Good pictorial link:

The time to make one is about 18 hours, longer if decent facilities and tools are not at hand, shorter if assistants (also with fletching skills) are. Figure about 2 hours per arrow.

You get SI chances to improve the sharpness of an arrow. (SI is skill/10, rounded down – 39/10 = 3.) A failed attempt could ruin the arrow.

Ok, so we should probably scrap the bowmaking bit for now. Not that it would help against a dragon anyway.

Survival 75/ Foraging 28/

We could use another player.

A few days ago, someone PMed me asking if he could join in. I came up with a really nifty character idea, but it would require pretty active participation, both on the board and by e-mail. That particular person can’t devote that much time to it right now.

Anyone else up to the task? It would be fairly heavy involvement (2-5 messages per day) for a couple of days, more if you want to stick around.
