Let's play a role-playing game

OK.

Let’s start with north.

You have enough supplies to get you to Gardiren. There are some outlying villages surrounding it, but before then, it’s wilderness all the way. It’s 20 leagues there, so at a rate of 1 league per hour, it will take 3 days (2 if you really push it). You are in decent health and are well-protected from attack. You carry 4 pounds silver.

You arrived in Getha 2 days ago. The weather this morning is bordering on warm, with lots of clouds and a stiff wind from the northwest. Rain threatens.

I am assuming we have enough food as well. Is that a good assumption?

Let’s head off and not worry about going too fast, keeping an eye out for spots along the way that would make a good shelter from the rain.

Yes. I thought I said that, but apparently I didn’t.

Damned caffeine.

I feel your pain.

I agree.

DM, surely we could carry a week’s worth of supplies?
Also, do messengers have mounts? That would save us a lot of time…

You’re both going crazy.

I don’t know about NAF. I know I am, though.

You have food for the trip and then some. You can buy plenty more in Gardiren. Food is not an issue.

You do not not have mounts. Chimin claims he has none to spare.

I think I am ok with walking for now if necessary. I would like to be able to pick up some mounts if possible before we leave town though. What is our money situation like and how much would horses cost?

You have 4 pounds, each of which is 240d. (Or 960f.) A basic riding horse is 360d, and you’d need five of them. Koldanar could double up with someone, but as it is your armor would be a strain on the horse’s backs.

A decent warhorse starts at 600d, and goes up from there.

Cheaper horses can be had, but they are best suited for pulling ploughs or carts, not for riding.

The place to get them would be an ostler. Most villages will have one, but their supplies might be limited. You can see that Chimin has a fair supply of steeds, but considering the needs of himself, his soldiery, and other nobles of the house, it’s easy to see that most of them are spoken for.

You could spend some big cash on a poor steed which might bear some of your load, but you have neither the cash nor the product for you to be a mounted company. You could try to purchase a warhorse, but none of you would have the special bond needed to utilize it as such, without spending some good training time with it.

If you want to explore the equine question further, let’s do so. Otherwise, you are on your way back north, afoot. Chimin bids you farewell and godspeed. You exit the village as simple but important soldiers.

Let’s get out of here. Maybe we’ll find something we can sell or stumble onto money between here and the next town.

Good deal.

I’m just a bit in my cups right now, and I’ve vowed to never post whilst in my cups (I like scotch), but informed consent calls…

  1. You’re not poor, your’re filthy rich. You just can’t afford steeds right now.

  2. If it’s armies you want to raise, south is the more direct route.

I’ve planned out a great adventure to the north, but I’m wondering why you all have chosen that path. You’ve all decided on some strategy that eludes me, right?

This is great fun!

I agree with Rugger that we should move on, as to why North and not South…dunno. Seemed like a good idea at the time. I don’t see why we should change that now.

ONWARD!

North it is.

You walk against a driving wind, which is making things pretty difficult. You go back up the valley along the river. It’s mostly uphill.

After several hours march, you see some people in the distance. There appears to be four of them. They are dressed in what appear to be green, brown and tan clothes that look pretty ratty. There are a few piles of boulders near them, NAF, you could swear that those boulders were not there before, but you’re not positive.

The people are off of the road to the right, at the river. They are doing some sort of strange dance.

I know exactly where we are going! We are going, uphill! [/Cheech and Chong]

Uphill, both ways, in three feet of snow. And we liked it, dammit!

One of the people seems to notice you. The others are oblivious.

Well I would like to steer clear of them, as they seem rather strange and we don’t remember much…

I am with glee. Make no eye contact and give them a bit of space.

The road goes within about 50 feet of them. Are you going to go off-road to avoid them?

It appears that there are two men and two women, one each of which are old and one each of which look youngish. They’ve spotted you and are coming to greet you, with big smiles. The older man is staying put, and is singing a very strange and haunting song. The older woman is holding what looks like a short burning twig, and every now and then she takes a deep whiff of the smoke. She seems a little… distracted.

“Hello, good sir knights!” yells the younger woman.
