Let's Play Dwarf Fortress! [Succession game forming now]

I am a complete newb, but I’ve always wanted to play DF. Can I join?

Sure, just read the tutorial I linked earlier. We’ll put you after a moderate player and before a skilled one.

Ooh! Ooh! I want to play! waves hand madly

  1. I’m at about the same experience level as Dinaroozie-- never been to hell, but if I haven’t done it in-game I know how to look things up.
  2. Early or later is fine, but I have more experience with early-game (well, doesn’t everybody)?
  3. Fort name: I say randomize for maximum WTFitude, but anything goes.

Will we have an order of players, as well? Or are we just going to pick as we go?

I would make an order, but so far we have only 3 players.

I won’t be able to play for a few hours, but if you guys describe what location you want (hills? Temperature? How important is wood?) I’ll embark when I get back

Should we postpone starting until we get a few more players?

I’m saying we start now and let others join when they come, but if people disagree I’ll hold off.

If we’ve got new players playing, probably a nice wooded area with a river and a non-freezing or scorching temperature is a good idea. We should be near some goblins though, or else there’s no fun*. I had a game recently to get back into the swing of things, that started in a freezing glacier with no water or trees, with terrifying surrounds. It was fun**. So probably that’s not appropriate.

To be honest, I think that if people literally haven’t played a game of DF ever, they’d be well advised to have a play around on one or two fortresses before having a crack at a succession game - even armed with quick wits and a good tutorial, suddenly being presented with a fortress that other people have already been playing on is going to be completely paralysing. If I recall correctly my first five or six forts fell to preventable issues, like running out of food because I forgot to farm and didn’t notice that food stocks were low.

That said, we can always just give it a red hot go and if the wheels immediately fall off we can start a new one if people are still keen. ETA: Yeah what Babale said.

  • In both senses.
** In mostly the DF sense.

I want to play!

  1. Skill Level

Very well skilled, I’ve been playing for a few years and have built many legendary fortresses, but I’ve never actually been in a succession game.

  1. Play early on or later?

Either is fine with me, wherever you want to put me.

Do you want me to temporarily change the thread title? It’s not really clear that we’re soliciting succession players from a glance.

Yes please do. Great to have a mod on board.

I’ll post the order soon, and start playing.

Ill be embarking with 2 miners, one miner/mason, one wood cutter/carpetner, and three “food workers” if that’s alright. I’ll take a few dogs, a bunch of cats, and standard supplies. Sounds good?

I’d love to play, though I might get confused.

  1. I’m an experienced player, though I normally play a moderately modded version (Primarily the Ironworks mod, making iron and steel harder/more realistic to smelt. I also mess with item values, because it makes no sense to me that iron should be as valuable as silver, and steel as valuable as gold.)

  2. Don’t put me within the first couple of years. I have a tendency to get so caught up in digging that I forget to set up farms/defenses/etc.

  3. Randomize it.

As far as embark goes, I’d go with a Proficient Weaponsdwarf/Proficient Teacher, unless we’re going to use danger rooms. (Cheating, in my book, but whatever.)

Dwarf Fortress Leader Order:

Babale (The Glorious Founder)
Dinaroozie
Autolycus
Flying Rat
FluidDruid
AndrewL
Silophant

If I’m missing you, it’s because you haven’t posted specifically enough for me to understand for sure that you want to play. Please fix that ASAP if you do.

As you can see, we have me (not skilled, but proficient) to start off, Dinaroozie to buff up the fortress during year 2, Autolycus (Complete newbie) when the fortress should be running well (this gives him time to play a few DF games alone to practice), Flying Rat to fix the fortress after Autolycus (You’ll probably break something  don’t worry about it, it happens to everyone. I mean, one of us would ruin it eventually anyways) and AndrewL to wrap things up.

Silophant is at the end because: 1) He ninja’d me. 2) He asked to be later.

Well I’ve never had much call for fighting before the first immigrant wave, but alright, I’d be willing to try this out. He can gather plants and haul stuff in his off time.

Well, I found a nice site. Took me a while; it seems like every temperate, wooded area with a river also had an aquifer. Finally, I found this site. The only problem is that it’s in the Untamed Wilds, which might cause some Fun.

Actually, this isn’t the exact site; I moved it to the left a bit, so the brook would be more central, allowing us easier water access.

Oh it is so on.

About taking a fighter with the first seven: Usually not necessary I agree, but hey, if we’re in untamed wilds it might make all the difference. I think untamed wilds won’t cause too much Fun since the first two players are fairly experienced (unless there’s a giant eagle, then we’re fucked).

Silophant, what is this Ironworks mod of which you speak? I googled it and got three hits, all unhelpful, one of which was this thread. It sounds like something I’d enjoy though - I’ve never really gotten into modding of DF. I suppose it’s the next frontier, for me.

There was a giant eagle, but he left.

And was replaced by five elephants. Yes, elephants.

We should be safe, though; I’ve fortified our position with walls, removing ramps, etc.

Yay elephants! One of the most useful animals in the game. Easy to catch, easy to tame. They can be trained into War Elephants, and provide an absurd amount of meat when butchered. I recommend catching many of them soon.

I notice that the embark site has no flux. We won’t be able to make steel. Eh, I’m used to defending my fortresses with absurd mechanical deathtraps anyway.

That’s what Dwarven Caravans are for!

And construction has already begun on an elephant-tunnel: A tunnel with cage traps, to trap up to 10 elephants at once!

I believe that since DF2010, almost all sites will have access to flux if you dig deep enough. But ‘deep enough’ might mean quite a lot of z-levels, and through caves full of nasty creatures and whatnot. Perhaps I’ll try to find my way to some flux stone in my turn, without dooming us all of course.
