The tube can be twisty. I lost a fortress once from assuming it goes straight down. Basically, you can’t safely touch any adamantine that’s part of any 4X4 block.
Damn, that’s cold. Glad I asked, though.
In regard to the fortresses possible hellfirey demise, would it be possible to mine a little adamantium, build a door from it, and then place this door in such a way that it can be locked and block access to all the HSF?
No. Demons are building-destroyers. They’ll destroy even an adamantine door. A raising drawbridge is reasonably demon-proof, however.
The main problem with releasing the demons is that they all constantly try to path to the surface every tick, which causes a massive FPS drain until you kill them all. And then more keep spawning.
Aren’t demons all capable of flight too? I’d think some kind of water room might work…
They aren’t all capable of flight, but none of them breathe, and their all fireproof. The only sure way to kill them is encasement in obsidian.
Wait, so some can fly?
Wouldn’t the ones that can’t fly generally be restricted to lurking down in hell? Cos their only way out would be the (in my experience mostly vertical and at least lacking ramps/stairs) shafts within the adamantine columns.
Yes. Demons that can’t fly are stuck on the floor of hell, where they trash your fps looking for a way up. Also, it appears demons can pass through constructed walls, or something. As you may have read, I miscounted, or misclicked, or something, and breached the tube. Since the game paused and zoomed to the point of breach, I immediately had that miner seal it with the adamantine he had mined, and happily watched him seal it before any demons made it even halfway up the tube… I then went about my business, pissed that I had messed up but happy that I had contained it, when I noticed that I was beginning to be spammed with “has been struck down” messages. I looked back at the adamantine mine to see salt ghasts and mosquito fiends killing everything. More and more keep spawning, despite the fact that the shaft is well and truly sealed. I’ll be posting the save shortly, since my dwarf will soon die. I also have a backup of the last save before the breach, if anyone’s interested in savescumming and continuing from there. I’m sorry, guys.
NooooOOoooooooooo!!!
Oh well, Hell happens. Don’t sweat it. Besides, it’s all that recent immigrants fault!
I guess once you breach that tube, it’s impossible to reseal and prevent demon rapage… who knew? I figured with walls or traps or something you could figure out a way to have a failsafe.
Anyway, I’m down for savescumming so the people waiting can get a turn in. I mean we’re just playing casual.
I mean, if it’s possible to continue and somehow create a “Mines of Moria” situation where the upper levels of the fortress are still safe, then of course let’s do that. Is there anything that can possible be done at this point in time?
Hahah It wouldn’t be Dwarf Fortress if you didn’t occasionally get surprised by some weird thing and get your fort trashed. I forget though… is the next player on the roster experienced? Cos if not, this is going to be a fun journal entry to read.
For what it’s worth, my best guess as to what happened regarding passing through the wall (not that I have all the facts - I haven’t looked at the save on account of no longer running that version of DF) is something about the wall being right near the spawn point. Is it possible that they kept spawning ‘around’ it? I reckon constructing another wall somewhere further up the passage (if that’s still achievable) might help, but it’s just a hunch. Although it’s not really going to help in the long run if the framerate remains unplayable, I suppose.
As for savescumming - I say we leave it up to the players who haven’t gone yet.
From looking at the save file, I can’t see where the demons are getting in. It looks like it would be possible to seal off the lower levels, including all the caverns and the adamantine, before the demons got to the main fortress levels. You’d then have to deal with the constant FPS hit, as well as recovering from having a big chunk of your population (including all the military) killed by demons. It’s up to Babale and whoever’s next in the rotation what to do.
I guess that’s probably it. I always assumed the demons spawned in hell, but I guess they might spawn all the way up and around an opened tube. The tube is definitely completely sealed.
I do have the staircase to the second cavern designated to be floored over and secured, although I’m not sure how far along the dwarves have gotten in actually building it.
Don’t go posting that save file and giving up just yet. In the rules that **Babale **posted earlier in the thread, he says that if your named dwarf dies, just name another and keep going. He also says to not give up so long as even a single dwarf lives. I think you should keep going and finish out your year, assuming the fortress can be saved at all.
I also wouldn’t mind too much if you savescummed to before the breach if the fortress turns out to be unplayable at this point, even assuming that it can survive at all.
I actually posted the save because my week’s up. I guess if the next player in line wants, I can finish out the year during this weekend. If not, I’m anxious to try out .31.19. So either way’s fine with me.
Oh, was there originally a week time limit? Well I say play out your year while the next player in line is notified and prepares.
Sooooo, what’s up? Is this the end? Say it ain’t so!
I was about to post the same thing. Is this how Joinglazed ends? Not with a bang but with… well, I guess being overridden by hundreds of hell-monsters is kind of an awesome way to go but still.
If this is the end, we should try it again some time. It’s been a blast, and I bet we convinced some lurkers to try the game out even if they didn’t participate. Perhaps a second succession game when the caravan arc is finished?
If it’s not the end though… I wonder if we’ll survive long enough for me to get another round? Save scumming, anyone? I’m keen to name Dinaroozie the Lesser, dammit! Plus as our military and wealth grows the goblin invasions are only going to get more epic. I hear that they eventually come riding giant bats… It’s a shame the dungeon master is still bugged.
The fortress as it stands now is probably unsaveable. I can try taking over and seeing if it’s possible to seal the main fortress from the caverns before the demons kill everyone, but I suspect that even if I do what’s left won’t really be playable long, between half the population being dead and the rest tantruming, and the FPS hit from hundreds of demons wandering loose. Actually, I think I may try that anyway, just as a challenge to see if I can.
The alternative is to savescum back before Silophant’s turn, or just before Silophant breached the tube, and then let someone else take over. That’s less satisfying IMHO, since it’s retconning the end of Silophant’s turn.
Babale? You started this game, do you have any preferences?
I’ve been lurking and greatly enjoying your game. I’ve tried playing in the past, but gave it up as too complicated. You guys inspired me enough to go read a tutorial but… not quite enough to actually try playing again. Anyway, just dropping in to say PLEASE either start a new one or a savescum (whatever the hell that means). You’ve got fans!
