"LETS PLAY TWO" - Ernie Banks Statue

That’s the inscription on the statue of Ernie Banks, recently installed outside Wrigley Field.

People have figured out that an apostrophe is missing.

No one’s yet asked “Two what?”

Isn’t that supposed to say “Let’s play, too”?

Or something?

No. The full quote is “Let’s play two.”

Banks often said this to express his wish that they play a doubleheader every day. The implication was “Let’s play two (games).”

I’ve always thought it was a reference to a double header.

heard an interview with the sculptor on the radio this a.m. He sounded like he had a pretty good sense of humor about this. His line was, “Well, it isn’t as tho it’s carved in stone or anything!”

In the paper it said it would be corrected in something like 10 minutes with a grinding tool. How will that be? I don’t think that can just cram an extra apostrophe in there. Wouldn’t they need to gring off the entire inscription, polish it, and then recarve it?

Umm, yeah, my company made that base and we put the text on according to the sculptor. The text was burned into the granite with a class IV laser, not carved. We are going to be fixing it today I believe, by grinding the apostrophe. There’s enough room betwen the letters to do it and make it look right.

We also did the World Series monument for the White Sox, the Michael Jordan statue at the United Center, and the big moon in the entrance hall at the Adler Planetarium.

Curious, but from the image I saw, it didn’t look as tho the spacing could handle an inserted apostrophe - that is, if it were the same size as the bracketing quote marks. The space between the T and the S seemed the same - or proportionally the same - as the spaces between all the other letters. Wouldn’t T’S take up more space than TS?

You say the letters were “burned into the granite” with a laser, but then say you will “grind” the apostrophe. Are grinding and burning synonymous, or will you use a different technology for the apostrophe than the letters?

Is there no procedure to check for obvious apparent errors on your end, or do you simply carve “whatever is written on the form”?

Does your firm just do the bases for these statues, or are you a foundry that also fabricates the statues?

According to the Baseball Almanac, the entire quote goes;

“It’s a great day for a ball game; let’s play two!”

Burning and grinding are two different methods of achieving the same look. when it’s done it will be fine. We have made in the field adjustments to other jobs with no problem.

This is why I love the Dope - thanks for sharing your unique perspective, MikeG.

Thanks for explaining the quotation, RealityChuck, Zebra, and Who_Me?. I had no idea.

Ernie Banks just passed away at age 83:

Everyone’s favorite player that didn’t play for their team. May you play 2 every day to your heart’s content.

I had to look and there is the corrected version. When you know, you can see it was an afterthought, but I doubt many people notice.
