I recently started a temp job which consists entirely of sitting at a desk, pushing papers around for 8 hours a day. It’s not unbearable, mainly because I get to listen to my iPod while I’m working. However, I find I quickly bore of the content I’ve already got loaded, so I’m looking for some good podcasts to keep me entertained. I’ve already gotten into the NPR programs and mumbleharrypottermuble happenings, but I’d like to expand my repetoire.
Dopers, please help me separate the wheat from the chaff! I’m up for anything, but I’d be especially interested to hear your recommendations for news, entertainment, and comedy programs.
Here are a few I like:
CBS News 60 Minutes (One/week on Mondays, 15-20 minutes, replay of one story from the night before).
Daily GizWiz (every weekday, 10-20 minutes on a gadget by Dick DeBartolo of Mad Magazine and the Match Game and co-hosted by the ubiquitous Leo Laporte – they spend a few minutes talking about the gadget and the rest kidding around and reminiscing on DeBartolo’s funny life).
Discovery Channel Features (intermittent, varying lengths, stories from various shows on the network).
History According to Bob (every day, 10-20 minutes on a particular historical topic, very well-presented – like listening to your best teacher from high school. Can’t recommend this one enough, especially if you have any interest at all in history. The best of the bunch, as far as I’m concerned.)
Slate Explainer Podcast (weekdays, 3-5 minutes, from the website column)
Slate Magazine Daily Podcast (weekdays, 5-10 minutes, story from the website).
The Body Odd (intermittent, 10-20 minutes, quirky listener questions and answers on medical topics by the authors of Why Do Men Have Nipples? One of them is a doctor).
I’m looking for more, especially longer ones (my commute is getting a lot worse in a few weeks), so if anyone has any recommendations, please post!
PENN JILLETTE’s Free Fm radio show. It airs for an hour, but is about 45 minutes without the commercials.
CBS recently sputtered out the official Podcast, but you can get the unofficial one (updated pretty much nightly Mon-Fri) from www.pennfans.net (or just subscribe to http://www.pennfans.net/index2.php?option=com_podcast&feed=RSS2.0&no_html=1 )
My goodness, how :o . I’ll offer up as an excuse that as a guest, I don’t think I can search, and I was out of town and away from the computer the day that thread was posted.
Anyway, thank you for the link, I’ll peruse that thread for some most excellent guidance.
Manic Mondays with Devo Spice is funny. That and others can be found at Mad Music Archives.
