Let's Talk Pokemon!

I need help building my team. I’m kind of tired of using Tourtwig so now I have an extra spot, but I’m not sure of who to fill it with.

I have a Ralts for my psychic/fighting
Houdour: dark/fire
Trapinch: Flying/Ground
Amphoros: electric
Lapras: ice/water

I’m trying to decide who else to put in there. I have all the strengths and weaknesses covered, for the most part. I’ve always liked Vulpix. My favorite type is ice, and I think I could use another electric on there. Any suggestions on which would be a good fit? I’m probably looking over a type difference.

Oh, and I’m trying to find an Electrobuzz or any of the evolutions of such.

Bricker Jr says:

Ralts is pure psychic, not psychic fighting, unless he’s a male and you evolve him into Kirlia by levels, and then use a Dawn Stone to get Gallade.

I just forgot the evolved named. I am keeping him Ralts until he learns Dream Eater and Hypnosis and then I will evolve him so he can learn Close Combat.

Bricker Jr says:

Dream Eater and Hyponsis sounds like a good combo, but not for Gallade. Look at Gallade’s stats. He has horrible Special Attack. Also since you don’t know what turn your opponent will wake up, you often end up missing (trying to hit with Dream Eater but failing because the target woke up). It’s better to have a reliable attack that will do more damage to a sleeping or woken up Pokemon.

That makes a lot of sense. What would he suggests I teach Gallade then? I guess I can keep him in, but keep him with Hypnosis and Physic, so then I have those bases covered.

Hamlet Jr. #3 says:

I SHELLLLLLAAASSSSSS. FWIIIIIIRRRREEEEEEE. I burn you. You die. I win.

She’s a tough one to beat.

Have you thought about grass/poison or rock/ground (or combination thereof) for the 6th? There are plenty of decent grass types out there, but Bulbasaur is a good bet. Golem could also work, but I’ve never really used one past the 25-40ish levels so I’m not sure. You could also go with a normal type, Tauros being a pretty good choice.

I have an Electravire and can breed you an Elekid. They evolve at 30, but I don’t have any of the item to evolve it further. I could show you my Electravire, though, so you can look for it on GTS.

I don’t need to see the Electravire, but I’d love an Elekid. What would you want for him?

I’ve never thought of a grass/poison type. They have never appealed to me, always seem a bit weak.

Hmm… The only thing I really need right now is a Totodile. If you don’t have one of those, could you get a low level Stunky with the Aftermath ability or a Gible? I’d also like to use you to evolve my Poliwhirl into a Politoed, if you don’t mind. I have plenty of King’s Rocks, but I haven’t gotten around to evolving Poliwhirl yet.

I’m not a huge fan of the grass/poison bunch either, but they are pretty good at status attacks, especially poison and sleep. And as another suggestion for your team, try Skorupi/Drapion (dark/poison). I’ve been levelling one up and its a lot of fun and pretty strong after it evolves. Drapion’s Sniper ability also bumps damage from critical hits from 2x to 3x, which is pretty nice when he has the crit+ item (Zoom Lens, I think). They’re also only weak to ground and immune to psychic, plus 3 or 4 resistances.

Bricker Jr says:

I like to give Gallade a Salac Berry and use him with Substitute, Stone Edge, Close Combat (as you suggested) and maybe a Swords Dance or Night Slash or Psycho Cut as the fourth move.

Psychic has the same problem. Gallade doesn’t have good Special Attack, so from Gallade a base power 70 Attack (Psycho Cut) is better than a base power 90 Special Attack (Psychic).

To use this move set bring Gallade in against someone that can’t hurt him too badly, like maybe Machamp. Then use the turn that Machamp switches out to Substitute. Then Swords Dance, let an attack break the Substitute, Substitute again and repeat once more which should trigger the Salac. Then Gallade will be +1 speed on top of his already awesome attack and he can mow through anyone he meets hitting first and doing big damage.

Looks like you guys are having a good time here. Is anyone interested in a battle by chance?

That sounds like great advice. I’ve never played against an actual person, so I’m going to have to start thinking a little differently. For example: the moment my opponent sees my Gallade they’ll switch out pokemon.

I do have another question: what’s the point of boosting speed?

This is all very good advice indeed. It is advanced competitive gameplay, this is really coming from a youngster?

You want to boost your speed so that you are more likely to go first against whichever Pokemon your opponent sends out.

Heh heh heh… yup.

My son is seven. He’s been playing Pokemon for about a year.

One of my favorite stories: last month, he was getting ready to leave his school’s extended day care. My wife had just arrived to pick him up, just as he had started a battle against a 16-year-old who works there and is also a Pokemon enthusiast who battles online and a lot.

“Don’t worry, Mrs. Bricker,” this kid says confidently. “Since you guys have to leave, I’ll make this quick.” And to my son: “Sorry about this. Maybe tomorrow we can have an easier battle, OK?”

My wife tells me that six minutes later, with the teen looking shell-shocked, his last battler died. (Fainted?) And my son had lost only two.

Yes, yes, proud papa here. But objectively: my son is scary smart, and he devotes a generous measure of that smart to Pokemon.

(In fact, as he was dictating that post to me, he had even more to say… something about building up Gallade’s stats in HP by killing lots of Gastrodons so that his HP can be divided by 4 instead of 3, but I edited those remarks because I didn’thave time to type and didn’t quite follow them…)

Yea that’s EV training, a way to maximize invisible values by calculating things that make my brain hurt. Furthermore it’s an exploit and not an official gameplay element, you actually have to go sort through pages of information online to figure that stuff out…He certainly didn’t learn it from the cartoon:)

Super impressive.

Rand, let me know as soon as you want to try your first battle. I promise you’re better off with me as competition than the boy genius.

I’d love to. Give me about a week or so until I retrain a Ralts and build a new team. Bricker’s son has given me a lot to think about.

All: I’m also looking for a female Paras or Parasect, any level. MeDrewNotYou I am interested in the trade, but I’m having trouble finding the pokemon you want. I’m working on it, though.

I’ll be around. I’m almost certain i can breed you a Paras if you can’t find one.

I don’t know if you are familiar with this site, it’s a great resource for planning your pokemon. Serebii.net Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold & Soul Silver Pokédex

That site contains all the stats and moves and all the info you could need on each Pokemon, for instance in the entry for Paras you can see that he learns one of the best moves on the game (spore) at level 17. Spore is so awesome in fact that it is usually banned from the competitive online metagame, but you needn’t worry about that if you are just playing with people casually.

I love that site. I was looking at it last night and that is why I decided to start a new team. I found a lot of my team on the “Pokemon of the week” and some of them they had nothing good to say. I am interested in that Paras. I am trynig to transfer my Earthquake from Torterra to Flygon and Pars is the only one that is in both Bug and Ground egg groups.
