Let's talk Videogames!

I went back two months and didn’t see just a general videogame thread, so I figured I’d start one.

What are you playing right now? What are you excited for?

I am currently replaying the Borderlands games for the zillionth time. Nothing special. I haven’t had a chance to check out Dying Light yet so I might buy that pretty soon. Heard it’s fantastic if you like fast-paced horror (which I doooo!).

Pretty much I’m just wandering around aimlessly until Fallout 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider come out.

Have to confess I have in the past six months entirely abandoned modern gaming and gone knee-deep into retro gorgeousness. I bought an MSX the other day and had terrific fun playing King’s Valley, Bubble Bobble, and Legend of Usas.

Bubble Bobble! Man I haven’t played that game in forever. What made you want to leave modern gaming for a bit? Nothing of interest?

Nostalgia, mainly  I like playing modern games but I feel a lot of them have lost the innocence and simplicity of gaming in its early years. That’s not a ‘games were better in my day’, comment - modern games can be and are excellent, but they are different for all that.

I’ve been collecting tons of old hardware in the last few years. I want to restore it all to working order and keep it as display pieces that I can play with as and when I feel like it. I could emulate but…I think there’s no substitute for the real thing.

Currently I own: Commodore 64, MSX, Amstrad CPC 464, Intellivision, Colecovision, Famicom, NES, Atari 7800, PC Engine, Mega Drive/CD/32X, SNES, Jaguar, Saturn, PS1, Virtual Boy, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, original XBox, Wii, 360 and PS3. And then handhelds: Original Bame Boy, Color, and Advance/Micro, Lynx, Game Gear, DS and PSP.

just a few bits left

You’re not messing around!
I have a PS2, PS3, Gameboy Color, and a 3DO. It’s a very short list, haha. I only have a few games for the Gameboy Color - I’m always on the lookout for more because it’s in pristine condition and I’d like to play it more.
But I keep the 3DO stored away for special occasions. I remember playing Escape from Monster Manor when I was little. Special place in my heart.

Oh, I would love to hunt down a 3DO! That’s where my hunting is drawing me to now - the most obscure stuff, although I only want to dig to a certain level - the 3DO, the Philips CD-I, and maybe a Commodore Amiga CD32 and a Neo Geo AVS if I ever won the lottery!

Very jealous of the 3DO!

I do plan to get the more recent consoles at some point but at the rate I’m going, probably quite late into their life. I am fearful that the older stuff will have another spike in value soon, and want to head it off.

I think you can find 3DOs online for around $100? Not too bad considering the costs of modern consoles.

Yeah, I’m having some trouble justifying spending $350+ for a PS4. It’s getting more and more expensive. That’s why I haven’t bought any new games recently. I’d rather pay one of my bills than spend that money on a single videogame. But I game every day, so maybe it’s worth it. :stuck_out_tongue:

If Fallout 4 ends up being as well-received as it looks like it will, I may change my stance, though. And Mario Maker looks pretty good.

Yeah I’m pretty stoked for Fallout 4.
The new Tomb Raider game is what’s pushing me to get a new console. Love me some Lara Croft.

I loved the 360 Tomb Raider reboot. Amazingly well done, although it leaned a bit much on shooting and less on puzzle solving.

Yes, agreed. I hear that Rise of the Tomb Raider will still include a lot of action, but they’re shifting their focus to include a lot more puzzles and actual tombs. That’s what I loved about the originals, so I’m interested to see where they take it.

I’ve been playing (when I have time) Heroes of the Storm still. I have a sexy, sexy new computer. So, of course, I play a f2p game all the time.

It’s aggravating at time. I hate people.

QWOP, the world’s most difficult video game, in which you control an Olympic runner, with separate controls for each calf and each thigh. Make him run.

I picked up Europa Universalis IV over the weekend, when it was on sale. I like grand strategy games, but I held off on getting this one because I didn’t much care for Crusader Kings II, which uses the same engine. Fortunately, EUIV seems to have done away with most of the things I dislike about CKII. I’ve been playing a fair bit, and even picked up the Common Sense DLC after the sale ended (see, that’s how the get ya). I look forward to reaching the point that the game lives up to this review.

Heroes of the Storm called to me when it came out, but I avoided playing it because I wanted to maintain a social life haha. I have a soft spot of MOBAs and MMOs, so I try to avoid both at all costs.
Is your PC custom built?

Nnnnoooo! I tried that. Once. Back in 2010. Thanks but no thanks. I’ve never been so frustrated haha!

That sounds tragic. BRB downloading PC Demo.

I just started Dragon Age: Inquisition. I know I’m like a year late on this one, but I was waiting for a decent sale and it didn’t occur until last month, and I picked up the Deluxe Edition for $28.

It’s good, but I’m not super gung-ho about it. I play it maybe half an hour a day, just one or two missions, and that keeps it from getting repetitive and boring.

I was on a bit of an arcade racing kick for a bit, playing most of the way through Grid 2 and NFS: Most Wanted. I also picked up MXGP.

Am really only waiting on Hitman, which got pushed back to like March 2016 I think. I’ll probably buy Fallout 4 at some point but it’s not a “Must. Buy. NOW!” game for me.

You’re the first person I’ve talked to who wasn’t obsessed with DAI. Do you generally enjoy Fantasy RPGs?

My biggest problem was that it was CONSTANTLY glitching on my PS3. But I put a good 200 hours into it regardless. I understand waiting. It’s hard for my to justify spending more than $30 on a videogame.

I’ve heard really good things about it though! Should be awesome!

I play it on my laptop. I enjoyed the other Dragon Age games, even Dragon Age 2, and I like the world and characters.

I don’t like the genre that much, really. I didn’t care for Skyrim at all. I need there to be more to do than just run from dungeon to dungeon collecting MacGuffins.

I recently finished another playthrough of Half Life 2, and I’m thinking about what game I should start on next. I just picked up a copy of Darkest Dungeon on sale, so I’m thinking it’ll be that. Other than that, I’ve been playing a lot of Diablo 3. I have a seasonal monk I can play at Torment 9, and then I started a new seasonal wizard and witch doctor.

I’ve been playing nothing but the Borderlands games for the last 5 or 6 months. I am greatly excited about the upcoming release of Fallout 4. In the next week or so, I plan to return to Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas to refresh my love of the wasteland. I have Fallout 1 and 2, but I find them rather tedious to play compared to the more recent games in the series. I’ve had a used copy of Arkham City for the Assbox 360 sitting in my entertainment center since last Winter. At some point, I should actually sit down and play it.
