Letterman tonite: Holy Crap! Sleepy Man Banjo Boys kills!

Three guys playing fiddle, banjo and guitar (duh, bluegrass), none of whom probably shaves, absolutely torch an old Earl Scruggs tune (the name of which I do not recall at the moment).

I want MOAR!

Until my coffee deprived brain processed “Letterman,” your thread title made me think there was some kind of Stephen King serial killer called “Sleepy Banjo Man” and I was picturing some excessively creepy person like Salad Fingers.

Three guys? Three little boys! I just watched it on CBS.com. They were fabulous! The banjo player is only nine years old. I loved how he would turn the tuning knobs to play some notes.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. They were great!

They can be seen here at the 39:00 minute mark.

that’s sick.

and I mean that in a good way -

OK, When I saw the words “none of whom probably shaves” I was expecting to see big long beards ala ZZ Top.

Wow, that was pretty incredible.

They were incredible, and cute as hell.

I wish they had played something easier though, or something more recognizable. That was a difficult piece, hard to tap the toes to, which is what you’re supposed to do with banjo music. Little showoffs.

Holy cow. You know that line from “Johnny B. Goode”, the one that goes, “he could play a guitar just like ringing a bell”? That’s about how easy it looked for that kid on the banjo. Unreal.

I’m not a banjo player, but I believe those are called Scruggs tuners and were invented by Earl Scruggs.

It’s a tuning key with preset stops that allow you to change the tuning of a string quickly, then quickly return the string to the original tuning position

That is bloody amazing.

I want a CD! Why are they not on CD?

Awesome, but the sound guy needs a kick in the pants.

How fun was that. Thank you for posting about these guys. I wish the guitar player (looked like a D-18 Authentic to me) needed to have better amplication on his guitar; I wanted to hear the leads he was ripping through more.

ETA: No surprise than another guitar played simul-posted with me on the sound. A guitarists’ brain, eh, Ogre?

You know it!

Wow. That actually was quite impressive. Great feel and technique. Those kids are good.

Wow that was AMAZING! There’s this little odd bit of Kentucky left in me (ooh! it hurts sometimes!) that is so happy when it hears banjo music!

You can pre-order it on their site. Yep, even eight-year old bluegrass banjo boys got websites.

That song is called “The Flint Hills Special” by Flatt and Scruggs. They are awesome! Thanks for the link!

They have a YouTube channel.

The fiddle player got out of synch with the guitarist a couple of times. Their Mama needs to get busy and birth a bass player to hold them together.

No song list. :frowning:

Not that I’d recognize much beyond Foggy Mountain Breakdown.
