This link is to today’s Letters to the Editor in Topeka’s newspaper, The Topeka Capital-Journal. To read them one must register, SORRY, but it’s free, and the letters are quite intriquing. They are the second and third letters on the page, titled “We care”, and “Forgive them”

“We care” is from Margie Phelps, Fred Phelps second oldest daughter and fourth child. In it she declares that not even their families care about the soldiers who have died, only the Phelps do. Some choice quotes:
*Family and community members use the dead body to worship the flag and demand God bless them. *
And
*You killed those soldiers! This nation raised the generation now fighting its wars on the damnable lie, “It’s OK to be gay,” and taught them many lesser included sins (divorce/remarriage, fornication, abortion, greed, etc.). *
The letter “Forgive them” is from Dortha Bird, one of Fred Phelps youngest children. She, like her brother Nate mentioned in the letter, got away from her father and his influence, going so far as to change her surname in the process. She chose Bird, as is “free as a ----”. In her letter she imagines herself as the wife, or sister, of a soldier who has been killed, and then views the picketing activities of her former family. Some quotes of hers:
*What would Jesus do? What did He do when He was under such extreme circumstances? “Forgive them, Father; They know not what they do.”
Did what was said to justify the killing of the Lord Jesus change what he actually was? And now this pitiful lot who say these things - Oh, God, how they must hate themselves? How isolated and lonely must they feel. And how fearful they must be to be afraid of God. *
I think I know which sister has her head screwed on right.
