"Level 16"

Though this movie was released almost 4 years ago, I just got to see it last night. No spoilers, please, because it’s all about not knowing what is going on even when you think you do! I highly recommend it!

“Level 16” is a 2018 sci-fi thriller by filmmaker Danishka Esterhazy (Danishka Esterhazy - Wikipedia). It follows a group of girls who live at a “school” which educates them about how to be perfect young women for families that they are told will eventually adopt them. Two girls work together to uncover the truth about their captivity.

I started watching this on Sun. night and was really drawn in. I even looked to see if it had been mentioned in the movie thread. I finished it yesterday and while the conclusion is a bit of a letdown, the bleak world of the school and not knowing what’s going on kept me interested.

I had to laugh at myself because I found it challenging to keep track of which girl was which(they all looked the same in their uniforms and dark hair in a bun).

Just from the blurb in the OP, I suspected that I knew exactly how this was going to go. I have no problem with spoilers, so confirmed this via Wiki.

@Jasmine what, in your opinion, distinguishes this from other recent films that use the exact same trope?

Watched it last year. I thought it was excellent.

We must watch different movies because the plot twist in this wasn’t “the exact same trope” for me. Overall, however, it boils down to what each of us as individuals like. As they say, opinions are like noses, everyone has one. They may look different, but none of them is anything special.

You’ve not seen The Island or Never Let Me Go? “Groups of people being raised in isolation” is going to be either the “being raised for parts” or “actually a space colony” trope, and nothing in your description sounded sci-fi-ish.

I agree, just wanted to know what made it so good - the actors, the setting, the storyline? Your OP made it seem like it was just the twist that made it worth it, in which case I’m going to pass.
