I’ve never watched the show, but this weekend I will have cause to have to say the names “Giggerota” and “Genevieve G. Rota” out loud in front of people who probably have.
My instinct is to pronounce them as follows:
“gigger” as in “bigger”
and
“ro” as in “doe”
“ta” as in half of “ta-ta”
(I’m assuming that the “Genevieve G.” is pretty much as it appears.)
Is this correct? Also, where does the emphasis fall? GiggerROta?
That’s correct, IIRC - it’s definitely a hard g. Not entirely sure about the o, though by simple euphony, that would be my instinct.
Oooh, re: “hard g” v. “soft g,” I meant to ask in the OP:

Like in good or like in genuine?
Does it have the English pronunciation (jen-a-veev) or the French pronunciation (zhon-vee-ev)?

Watch out for “Genevieve.” I had an aunt who went through life correcting people: “It’s zhawn-vyev, not jenna-veev.” I then had a coworker who was, in fact, jenna-veev.

Lexx was a show I really tried to like, but fell asleep on more often than not. The camp was too weird to be campy. The SFX were not even good enough to be considered retro. The acting was stilted, except for the guy who played Stanley Tweedle and the woman who played the second Zev (or Xev); the first one seemed like she was mortified to even be on the show, and although she did kind of have an Elke Sommer sexiness going for her, her replacement was nothing less than smoldering hot.
And it’s pronounced: jig-uh-RAH-tuh.
It went for 4 seasons, the first “season” being a 4-part miniseries, then 3 TV seasons. In the last season, they came to Earth. It ended in 2002.
The first few episodes were a mini-series made for Showtime (?) and then it became a TV series. And then it got really weird, though the time they spent on Earth was flat out comedy/satire. Ellen Dubin played Giggerota, and she was also in Napolean Dynamite (she played ND’s prom date’s mom). I LOVED Lexx. It was really…different. Tim Curry, Barry Bostwick, Malcolm McDowell, and Britt Ecklund all had small roles in Lexx. The very last episode was open to the possibility the series could have continued, but without the whole cast signing on, no go. And probably bad ratings.
It was easily the most bizarre sci-fi series I have ever seen and is one of my all-time favorites second only to Babylon 5. It was frustrating at times but mostly you had to respect the writers for that. For example you kept hoping that Kai would regain just the smallest portion of his “soul” and while they had no problem teasing you with this possibility, it was never going to happen. You could understand that though in Kai’s case. On the other hand, I’m not sure there was an excuse for never letting Stanley grow some kind of a spine. C’est la morte.
Lexx is the reason I’m terrified of physicists calculating the mass of the Higgs-Boson.
