Lie To Me

Anyone catch it last night? I thought it was pretty good, but I’m going to have to give it a couple more episodes…I can’t quite make out Tim Roth’s character from the first installment.

The premise is that he’s an expert in detecting evasive behavior based on body and facial language. He’s got to figure who’s lying and why.

I thought his performance was good, but there was some reference to him being kind of crazy, so I’m looking to see how it fleshes out.

His sidekick is the girl from The Practice (the one who married the other lawyer…I forget her name). I like this character better than her lawyer character.

One review (I didn’t read it, but it was in the Chicago Trib) said that this is the likely successor to House, which in his opinion, is going downhill. (I disagree!)

So…what did you think? Is it a keeper?

I thought it was okay, but based on the first episode I don’t give it very long. Too derivative.

I kept waiting for Tim Roth to shoot someone. Sadly this didn’t happen. Interesting show, I’ll watch until they cancel it, which can’t be that much longer.

My only interest in it is for Kelli Williams, whom I’ve always thought underrated as a hottie.

That’s The Practice girl, right? She looks better now than she did back then. Who’s the cute Latina girl they picked up at the airport? I think I’ve seen her in something, but damned if I can remember.

This is what I was going to say.
For anyone interested in watching it: Hulu - Lie to me.
It’s a good show, or the pilot seems to be. I like the guy who’s compulsively honest.

“How are you in bed?”
“Fair.”
“Fair’s better than most.”

I almost fell out of my chair.

I think she’s a bit past “girl,” but yes, she was on the practice. I too agree that she has improved with age and child-bearing.

At my age, most all of 'em are girls.

The would be Monica Raymund according to IMDB.

I liked it well enough, but I can already predict an outline of the entire series:

Government brings in Tim Roth’s character to provide some kind of confirmation of a minor part of a case that is airtight and just ready for prosecution if that one little detail could be confirmed. Government tough guy doesn’t want or need Tim’s opinion, but he’s following orders by allowing him to interview the witnesses.

Tim Roth discovers that some witness is lying, thus everything that the government thought was true about the case is actually wrong. Someone who was being falsely accused or was lying to protect someone else is exonerated, and someone who seemed totally innocent is totally guilty.

Then there is an action scene where someone gets chased and caught.

G-man grudgingly admits that Tim Roth’s techniques worked…this time. A grateful family/spouse/child is thankful for Roth being able to get to the truth.

Running alongside this is the side story of how Tim Roth’s obsessions make him distant and unable to connect with people on a personal level. Female partner lectures him about how to relate to people. Also there is sexual tension constantly between the four main characters on the team.

It was all right…not great. I like Tim Roth, so I’ll probably keep DVR-ing it. Until it gets cancelled, which it will.

Hmmm…I thought she looked more familiar than a single appearance on a TV show.

That’s why I’m watching, too. I think he’s one of the best actors around today.

They need to develop the characters more. Right now the plot is good enough, but all the characters are blank slates. They are all too confident and have no issues. They need issues for me to care about what they do, or at least so that I can relate to them.

Right now it looks a lot like House, except the characters on House are more fleshed out. They have doubts, fears, obsessions, and worries just like real people (especially House).

I’ll give it a few more episodes to see if they can make me want to watch the characters instead of just the plot.

My hope is that this show gets canceled before Feb. 13th so that Josh Whedon’s Dollhouse can take its spot. There is no other slot in Fox’s line up for Whedon’s new show so it’s being shown on Fridays. Lie to Me took the only open slot so here’s to hoping it fails.

They have already telegraphed this with the revalation that Kelli William’s husband is hiding something. I can see the affair fallout coming from here!

They already started with some issues, at least with the girl from the practice.
Her husband is cheating on her, and she chooses not to recognize it.

Also, the habitually honest kid?

And the owner of the company, he seems… off, I’m waiting for an explanation as to more about him.
I liked it well enough to add it to my DVR lineup. I can see where it might have some limitations though, I mean, how many different ways can people lie? At least on House, there are always new diseases (though not Lupus, obvs.)
