Here’s proof, just a few weeks ago on the buzz index on the my yahoo module the top hits were “Anthrax” and “Bin Laden” and the like.
Now it’s
1 Dragon Ball Z
2 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
3 Britney Spears
4 Michael Jackson
5 Xbox
Yup, back to the McDonalds eating Nike worshiping capitalistic hell hole we call home.
That’s right. We should remain stressed out and worrying for the rest of our lives, constantly reading and re-reading the same old news while failing to learn of anything that’s actually NEW. While we’re at it we should forward all those warnings about terrorists who told their girlfriends not to shop in the mall on Black Friday, because that’s better than daring to try to move on with our lives.
I’ll take some news about the real world rather than being pleasently sedated by hollywood. Have fun at harry potter tonight, I think I might go do something worthwhile with my life.
So suddenly, because of all of this, going out to movies is worthless and not worthwhile? I fail to see the connection. Unless you’ve never gone to a movie in your life, and swore that they were pointless wastes of time before all this happend. In which case, I guess I just feel bad for you.
I guess there’s nothing I can do to change your mind. You are in a world that is run by hollywood, and you will fight hard to protect your bliss of ignorance.
Nice to know that my world is run by Hollywood. Considering I don’t own a television set and spent half an hour last night explaining to Gunslinger that no, I haven’t seen that movie, or that one, nor do I want to, nope, no, sorry.
And I’m fighting hard to protect my “bliss of ignorance” because I don’t believe that everyone in the world should drop everything and sit glued to updates of “no new developments” and “no new developments” and so on and so forth? Sure. If that’s how you want to feel, go right ahead.
So… seeing the same ads that you obviously do, because you must be on a computer to, automatically makes MY life centered around Hollywood, but not yours, just because you decide to piss and moan about other people wanting to search for entertainment news on Yahoo! and I don’t?
What I loved about the SDMB is that there are very few ads, if any. I could have interesting conversations with people like yourself in a utopia of sorts. Sadly even that may change with hollywood’s constant push. Congrats on being almost to 2000, maybe I might make it there if things stay this way.
Aw man, lighten up clayton. Why, with some people, does everything have to be black and white? I don’t think racinchikki is “sedated by Hollywood”. But there’s the same news over and over each night. When something else becomes really big in the news, people will go right back to finding out all they can.
Golly! Clayton’s right! I can’t believe how insensitive and uncaring and brainwashed I’ve been! I will immediately return to huddling in the corner in front of CNN, dressed in sackcloth and ashes, mourning the evil and ignorance of the world. And flagellating myself. That would probably help, too.
I apologize if I am insulting anyone, I only want to state my opinion on our society, I have nothing against any of you personally and I’m not trying to force my ways upon you, do what you will, just know that there is another way.
I, for one, am glad for the return to normality. I found it sickening the way the media drummed up hysteria about things which weren’t a threat to the average Americans. One of the local news stations here had a reporter break into a water treatment plant to prove how easy it would be for terrorists to put something in Nashville’s water supply. I have a few problems with this:
The halfwit broke into a sewage treatment plant and didn’t realize it!
Why the hell would terrorists want to take out Nashville?
They’re only giving ideas to mindless punks who’ll do something stupid because they think it’ll be “cool” to do something they saw on TV.
How is something like this news? If we covered all the “might be’s” and “maybe’s” in life, we’d be too paranoid to do anything!
So because this war isn’t being covered in surround sound and wall-to-wall Bomb-O-Vision[sup]TM[/sup] you think that we’re being overrun with Hollywood and we’ve somehow forgotten something important in life? Get a grip! Maybe you have, but some of us have learned what’s important because of this whole thing, like you know, family, friends, and people you care about!
clayton_e reminds me, for those in the know about queer comics, of Mo from Dykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel. Unfortunately, I can’t find a decent example of the worry-worry-how-can-you-act-normal-when-the-world-is-ending-?! personality in the limited archive the Washington Blade has available…
Your definition of “normality” must be pretty screwed up if this is normal. The constant pollution of the planet, the starvation of nations of people, Indonesian sweatshops, the constant threat of nuclear war, the destruction of the ozone layer, acid rain, the melting of the ice caps, child labor in Costa Rica, the draining of the world’s oil supply, etc. etc. etc. is not “normal” in any fucked up definition of the world. There are still problems out there, and new ones are just surfacing.
The government has declared a “war on terrorism”, a permanent war on all people who are not explicit supporters of the US government (“Either you’re with us or you’re with the terrorists” mentality).
Right now it’s Afghanistan, but I would not be surprised to see incursions into Iraq, Chechnya, Cuba, Moldova, or any other régime that is not an explicit ally of the US. It’s terrifying.
This must be why people look to the brainwashing mind-warping Hollywood commercialism. To escape…
Oh. My. God. I apologize to clayton_e for comparing him to DTWOF’s Mo. I didn’t realize there was an even more perfect representation of the character type posting until I read this…
