Wrigley purchased the Life Savers brand from Kraft/Nabisco in 2004. Mars subsequently acquired Wrigley four years later.
For whatever reasons, Mars has kept Wrigley in place as the “parent” company to a handful of other brands, such as Life Savers, Altoids, Starburst and Skittles.
I bought a bag of life savers last week. Flavors seemed to be mixed evenly. I didn’t look very closely. They are still my 2nd favorite hard candy. Bob’s Soft peppermint is #1. Werthers #3
Rolls of lifesavers are hard to find. Vending machines are your best bet.
Skittles combined with aluminum based anti-persiperants, pump action hairsprays and Cool Water cologne cause you to turn into a Joker acolyte. It’s true.
You can buy just the pineapple Lifesavers on ebay if you don’t mind spending the money. Pretty expensive.
Pineapple is my favorite but I really like the cherry too.
I agree that the lime flavor was good, and infinitely superior to the “watermelon that barely tastes like watermelon” flavor. If I had a bag of nothing but orange, lime, pina colada and pineapple I’d be ecstatic. I can always scour for the random butter rum flavor rolls.
I like Jolly Ranchers too, just not quite as much as my favorite Lifesavers. I will say though that the Jolly Rancher watermelon flavor actually tastes like watermelon.
I gotta be careful eating those though…I’m often prematurely tempted to bite down on them and they are probably harder than any other candy on the market. Don’t want to crack a tooth!
Pineapple, schmineapple. The real tragedy in today’s candies is that lime has been removed! “Original” Skittles, Life Savers, generic suckers from the bank- no lime anywhere! There should be a lime lovers’ revolt, as lime is definitely the finest of the candy flavors!
Fortunately, I have mastered the art of making my own lime hard candy using sugar, corn syrup, LorAnn oils and citric acid.
Anyone else remember the Sir Isaac Lime protest? I wasn’t a regular popsicle eater anymore by then, but Sir Isaac and Orphan were my favorites as a child. Also never cared for late comer Louie. Not a big blue raspberry fan.
I too am addicted to them, and always disappointed in how many chocolate and cherry ones there are vs. raspberry, grape, and orange, which are all superior. Raspberry is the best. Even buying a bag every month for a few years now, I’ve only ever seen one lime one and a few lemons since those are “special edition” limited flavors.
I like lemon and lime, too, especially lime. Why has it been replaced everywhere by green apple or something else? Even in Skittles, where the green no longer blend with the other flavors, and eating them in the dark (at the movies) is no fun anymore.
As far as life savers, which now seem larger btw, somebody make them bring back the original five flavors, and fancy fruits so I can have my tangerine and pear flavors please!
Skittles has a limited edition with the long-lost lime. My sister brought me a bag a while ago because I apparently have complained a great deal about lime flavor going away.
